I am heading out there tomorrow and will be camping about 3 miles east of Fish Creek wash off Split Mtn road.

A 2wd Tacoma will do fine on a lot of the trails in this area.

I'm new to Southern California and ready to get out and see some of it. I'm driving an 80 now, can't get my profile pic to change. I'm in San Clemente and I'm definitely in for this trip.

I'm out here now and the weather is fantastic! I had to drive all the way to salton city to get gas because the main gas station in Ocotillo Wells is out of gas again. The nice thing is that there are plenty of trails that head out that way so there is no need to use the highway.

Yeah, that has happened twice to us too. The good news is you can go east to Salton city or west to Borrego springs. Another thing we ran in to is that you need a metal container for fires if you camp anywhere in the Anaza Borrego park. Not an issue in the neighboring Ocotillo Wells ORV area.

Sounds like there will be a number of folks who will visit this area for the first time joining us. I would recommend meeting at Fonts Point on Friday around noon. The view from there is amazing and it will give you an idea of the area. From there head southeast to catch the pumpkin patch, shell reef etc. Camp at the campground at the entrance to fish creek just off Split Mtn Rd. Late arrivers could meet us there. Spend Saturday exploring the wind caves and Sandstone Canyon area. Spend that night at the same campground.

Just thought I would throw something out for discussion.

I have a friend in San Diego with a 2WD Tacoma with the rear locker (TRD). Would he be fine in Anza Borrego? If we new we were going to do anything that would require 4WD, he could just ride with me.

Thanks

I am still learning Anza. So, maybe someone more experienced can correct me. But from what I understand he will be fine any place you take your 100. The trails that get harder and require more 4wd also get narrow. And most full size rigs have a harder time fitting. There is so much to see and do out there... I guess it would really depend on how hard you wanted to push it.

I am going to chat with the wife and see about making it that weekend.

x2 on the above. The main obstacle we will face is deep sand.

BTW my sig line picture was taken at the lower Coyote Canyon water crossing. This is at the NW part of the Anza Borrego Park. We won't encounter this if we follow the route I described in an earlier post. Like Mxndrnks said, lots to see in this area.

I am 95% in. Just trying to figure out if the wife, 3yr old and 5mo old are coming with. If so, I may need to meet up with you guys early Sat. Morning. If she and the kids don't go... I will be out there anytime you want to meet on Friday.

Cheers!

I'm 95% in too. I got my cruiser to show some signs of life last weekend and intend to wrench hard to get it ready. I will have my wife and our 14 month old with us but I think we will try to do Friday and Saturday.

Do do we have an official meeting place and time? I will be coming in Friday, should be about noon. Will be prepared to camp for 2 to 3 nights, depending on what everyone is ready for. Looking forward to this trip.

I'm pretty sure I am in. I had a lot of fun when I went out to Anza last month. Camping sounds fun. I get to try out my new turbo tent!

Yep, here it is in my backyard. Got a real good deal online.

I'll be running ham, cb, FRS for COM. At night, I'll put my large 20 meter antenna up and will be talking around the world. The desert has awesome HF radio conditions since there is little man made noise.

If you have a swr meter, could you bring it? My cb works ok, but I'm sure it could use a quick tune. I have a tunable firestick antenna. Thanks

I'm interested! The dates can likely work for me, though i'm probably going to join only over two days.

I don't have a SWR meter for CB. My radio has one built in, I have never needed one.

PM sent, I've got some suggestions for you.

I am so close to getting the cruiser back on the road. Right now it looks good for this trip. In fact I'm using to motivate me to work harder.

Ok, after consulting with Bluecruiser, here is the plan. On Friday the 17th we will meet at noon at the Fonts Point turnoff. It's well signed and is on the S22 just east of Borrego Springs. After driving out to the view point we will head southeast into the Park and visit some of the points of interest. From there, on to the Pumpkin Patch, shell reef, etc. We will end up at the Fish Creek campground which is southeast of Ocotillo Wells just off of Split Mountain Rd.

We will set up camp at Fish Creek campground where later arrivals can join up with us. This is a non-fee, primitive campsite with a pit type toilet, no water and no shade. Not too many camp sites but we should be able to fit everyone in. Fires must be in a metal container, and fire rings may be non-existent. So plan accordingly.

Sat. will be spent exploring fish creek and sandstone canyon. Spend the night again at the same campground. Sunday we'll pack up and head west to the "slot" and maybe head to the mud caves. The slot is a very unique, narrow sandstone slot canyon that is an easy hike. The mud caves are located east of the S2 hi way, north of the 8 freeway. Bring a headlamp and a handkerchief or something for the dust. Do a google search on Borrego mud caves. Kids love exploring in them.

We can figure out what to do on Sunday when we are on location. Sooo much to see;) Suggestions for what to see and do are definitely welcome:cheers:

Later I will post the GPS coordinates for fonts point and the fish creek campground.

So who's in?

This sounds awesome. Really looking forward to this trip. Hope everyone can come. At least head out for a day trip, if you can.

I think we have decided we are in regardless of if I get the cruiser going well enough or not. I can always take the H3. We really need to get out and have some fun. That said I intend to wrench my rear off this weekend and get that 60 on the road.

If I can get out of work early enough we will meet you at noon but most likely we will either meet at the camp ground or if possible try to track you all down.

I fondly remember our trips out there when Michael lived in SD - I wanna go back one of these days in the cruiser :steer:
