hey guys
as it turns out, there is a chance that I may spend some time in Santa Fe. I'm trying to put together some info on living expenses-- anyone care to hazard a guess at what it would cost to insure a 91 landcruiser.

I'm married, 35, no accidents/tickets in 10 years or more.

I'm not looking for a quote, just a ballpark.

Thanks

Depends. Does the insurance company know that I will steal an 80 with a 1HD-T??

Seriuosly, my faux-lux (diesel converted mini truck--probably some what similar to yours in terms of insurance: ie high mileage, low bluebook, but high real value) costs just under $1,000 a year, and I've got coverage for EVERYTHING because I know what it would cost to replace...

Hey Steve,

It would be great to meet you in the flesh after all this time after all the emails over the years. I wouldn't let insurance cost be a deciding factor. You can almost pay as little or as much as you like. Basic liability would be pennies. I pay about $1060 a year for coverage on 2 vehicle (FJ60 and Porsche 944) and I carry extra heavy liability ($1M I think). Just keep in mind that if you carry collision/theft and the truck is toast you'll only get the low Blue Book value unless you write a stated value policy to cover all the goodies you've added.

Good info. at this point, insurance is low on the list of deciding factors, but I'm trying to put together an accurate budget.... my source of income is here, so there is a very very direct correlation between how much it costs to be there and how long I can not be here.
That sure was a complicated way to say what I'm thinking! Ha!

Anyway, I was guesstimating about $100/month, sounds like that is about right.

And as for theft: It is unlikely you'll ever meet someone who is more anal/aware/concerned than I am re: cruiser theft. I don't want to temp the fates, but it would be a very dedicated thief who steals my cruiser! --Been there, done that, didn't get the tshirt cuz I didn't like the soundtrack.

I would say $100 a month is a good figure to base your budget plan on. I am 32, married and have kids. I insure an '87 FJ60, '89 Camry and '98 Accord and it's just under $100 per month for all three. Of course the FJ60 and Camry have practially no "Book" value so they don't cost much but if you add all three up it would probably be equal to the Book value of your truck.

I'm 34, single no kids (crap this sounds like it be in some dating posting). My insurance is a bit high about 120 (for cruiser and 4 runner) a month. But, I didn't have much of an insurance record till about the late 90's so they kept me up there. Mostly I drove my dad's truck after he passed away and my mom let drive that till I had someone pulll out in front of me and that got totaled.

thanks again for the info guys! I'll keep you posted on travel plans.

don't forget to sneak in a few engines into the country :D

:hhmm:

Reminds of an employee I have who has brother that imports vehicles to the U.S. from South America.

yeah, well...
there's many a slip twixt cup and lip. My wife might have a career opportunity up there, perhaps.
So, thanks in advance for the welcome, it is premature but I appreciate it just the same.

If we end up there, I look forward to having a group of cruiser-nuts to play with.

As for engines.... I have actually considered driving a small trailer up with some motors and whatnot. Need to learn more about US customs (and Honduran, Guatemalan, Salvadorean....) to see if it is a worthwhile moneymaker.

When things start to crystallize, ya'll will be the first to hear about the potential hd-t fest.

You may have developed your own little cottage engine import industry, Steve.

Actually I have Farmer's and like them. Why don't you?

Dont use Farmers they are terrible.

I guess it depends on who your agent is. I had Farmers for auto and home, but when I bought the 80, the auto was too much. For the extra 20 bucks I have the 4Runner with liabilty and 80 and with full coverage from State Farm. Still kept Farmers for my home though.

Ditto State Farm.

Yep, I guess it just depends on your agent. Our agent gives us tips on how to save money, and we get discounts for having Farmers for both Home and Auto, and doing an automatic payment. Plus you can bounce around coverages on their website to see what changes will cost. Nobody (not even State Farm) is lower. PM me if you want his name.

IMHO, insurance is pretty much like any other consumable products that we buy - someone always has a more competitive price. Every year, I take the quotes from Geico and Progressive and shop around with the locals to see who comes the closest in terms of service and premium rates. Surprisingly, you can bargain your premiums quite easily once you show the best quotes you've received. Granted, the local ins company branches won't be able to match the internet based companies like Geico and Progressive, but they'll sure try hard to get your business.

I've been with farmers for a long, long time. After living in NM for a year, I noticed a slow creep of the premium rates. I shopped for the best quotes and then showed it to them, they lowered the premium. The following year, the same thing happened but at a steeper rate. Again, more quotes were shown and they just couldn't come close so I left them for Allstate.

The most recent auto renewal rates with Allstate showed a slight increase and when I called my agent, she quickly removed the increase and lowered my rates even more!

Like I said, this is a product that like any other and should be shopped and compared for the best bang for the buck. Agents relationship is no longer a big deal to me as the money that leaves my wallet every year on insurance.

YMMV as they say!

...get discounts for having Farmers for both Home and Auto, and doing an automatic payment...

me too. Grown-up, no accidents, and I get a public safety discount. Around a hundy for renters & liability on a 60 & the Honda.

But... I cancelled my motorcycle insurance, and now it'll double when I pick it up again. Time to go shopping...
