I am looking for input on a "Security" glove box replacement project I have been considering.

I'd like to make a secure, lockable box and door to replace the stock cardboard and sheet metal stock arrangement - think Tuffy style (they make a similar product for Jeeps and early Broncos I think).

The plan is to make the door from heavier gauge steel, thinking 11 GA. at the moment. The door would be laser cut and bent to look almost exactly like the stock door. I would add a piano hinge and keyed lock.

The box would be flanged to bolt into the stock mounting holes and would be approximately the same size as the stock box. It would be made from 16 GA steel, laser cut, bent and welded.

Based on some research I've done I think this could be sold for about $290 shipped depending on details, group-buy quantity and finishing.

What do you all think? Is there interest in such a thing? What modifications and/or additions to the above would you think would be good? (I was thinking of an interior LED light on a door activate switch...?)

If there seems to be interest I'll move forward with the planning and start a Merchandise thread but I wanted to try to gauge interest first....

Thank you all,
Mark

Sounds like a great idea. I'd be interested if we could match stock color and I'd like to apply the oem decal to mine so it would look stock.

Too much dinero. I'm sure it's worth what your asking based on the fabrication involved but too much for my wallet.

Good idea, I have done the drive down to Costa Rica a few times and having a secure box in your truck gives piece of mind. I would like a smugglers compartment in the back of it, something just big enough to stash some cash or very important papers that you don't want the "authorities" to see and poke around in.

Well, it's a nice idea, as an alternative to say, a Tuffy console, but if the price is equal to or more than the Tuffy, which has more space and utility (secure a radio, cup holders! ), I'd think most would go for the Tuffy.

All good stuff... I HAVE a Tuffy console too but I liked the idea of increasing the utility of an existing part of the truck. Plus it wouldn't attract attention like a center console might... and it doesn't alter the "stock" look of the interior for those that care about that kind of thing.

Molded plastic is an option I suppose but I wanted it to be more secure than that... not sure plastic is the upgrade I am looking for.

i LIKE the idea of a stealth storage option...

stealth storage is a false floor with lockable compartment... bolted to the cargo area a good place? and deep tint?

Yes, I have a Tuffy, also, and would be interested in the addt'l capacity of a secure glove box, for a kill switch, for instance. I guess the price point would reflect the level of security people are willing to pay for.

A $300 glovebox? Why not just buy a Tuffy for that price?

Direct replacement, easy install, retains stock appearance, adds even more/alternative secure/lockable space...

I still think you have a good idea with this. Can't have too much secure space these days. Almost everything for our trucks is expensive. Quality products cost money. I am happy to support someone who goes the extra mile for developing a good idea. Wagongear for example. I'd love the tailgate storage. 'one day and will support them when the time comes. Of course we have to keep up the mechanicals of our trucks first and foremost, then we can buy the extra goodies. That said, I say keep developing your idea. "If you make it, they will come."

I like the idea too. You've got to pay for high quality stuff, we all understand that...$290 is a tough pill to swallow tho.

But overall, stealth storage is a good idea...don't drop the idea.

My 61 has a lockable glove box and it works well for what it is, obviously must be something country specific you are talking about with security as we don't have a problem like that in Aus that requires a solid glove box.

So on my list of priorities it would be sitting right near the bottom and as you know with 60's the list is always long.

No car break-ins in Australia?... wow, I'm moving there! ;-)

To be less sarcastic: I like the idea of being able to, say, lock my wallet (or gun, if I had one) in the glove box while I'm wheeling. I don't like to keep my wallet in my pocket when I'm out crawling around pulling winch cable, climbing under trucks etc... and I don't lock my truck when I walk away from it on the trail. Sometimes it is out of line of sight for an hour or so at a time in an ORV park with 300 other people roaming around...

What about under seat? Instead of glovebox. Make a security box that is hidden that fits under the seats. I like the idea of secure storage. It's not exactly difficult to open a 60.
