I need some feedback from you guys with auto trans in your 70s,I am looking at doing a engine swap either 13BT or 1hzT into a 40.
I am not wanting to rock crawl just back road exploring for lakes to fish and camping,my question is how well do you 70s perform with a auto tranny.
No one seems to have done a auto trans in a 40 I would probably be the first, thats why I am asking for feedback from you guys since the automatic was common in the 70 series

the auto performs very well off road.
allow for an upgrade with an extreme valve body as the stock autos are a weak link...

Gotta say, at first I hated the auto compared to the standard but things changed once the kickdown and throttle cables were adjusted and I got used to it. We wheeled it on some mild to intermediate trails last summer and it kicked ass...no extreme valve body yet but who knows, maybe one day.

what is the extreme valve body what does it do,who stocks it,would you have to change the torque converter fot the valve body upgrade

Outback snagged the account for the extreme valve body.
chat with Greg Bowie or Sheldon Walsh about the effects of the valve body swap
no torque converter swap/mods is needed.

Can anyone tell me the overall length of a auto and transfer box,my 40s all have diesels in them so the engine swap will be a direct bolt up just need to measure how far back a auto trans and TBox will go back to figure out how much shaft I will have

What tranny are you guys running? Diesel A440?

Nothing is better than an auto..........
While we're on the subject will the A343F still work properly if I change the 2L-TE over to a non EFI pump as in not using the ECU where the tranny plugs in as well? I think it should work if the throttle position sensor is still used. Could I be right about that?

I think that the length of the auto compared to the manual box is the same as there is a spacer between the box and the trans in my car, maybe to make up the length as in the manual setup I presume.

can't vouch for the LC auto trannies... but I do believe toyota makes some of the best auto trannies in the business at least they did... for corollas and camrys

I've seen cars with over 400,000km's still going on just fluid changes! (for the tranny at least)

they do not hold up, at least behind the diesels they are not and even the 62s are reporting them dying in large numbers.
they over heat and the fix seems to be a valvebody kit and an aux cooling rad...

i own a 74 with 200000 kms with a auto and i really like it, it's great to have both hands free when wheelin, the tranny is still strong and crisp. i plan to install the valve body this year which will give lock up in third and greater cooling.

the only down side to an auto is no bump start. imo.

The 2LTE needs the RPM output and the TPS signal to run properly... RPM signal comes from the pump. TPS could be hooked up some other way (since you need the throttle cable to actuate the pump).

in the cruisers they are a weak link,,,

I hope you are wrong, but time will tell. Mine is holding up very well so far and I am not very nice to it.

really? not nice? i would have never guess...

BTW, a little birdie told me the LJ auto is the same as yours and the HZ...

this is a stand i am taking recently. the more i looked into the auto tranny the more i saw the problems..

The bottom line in my question was NOT to determin if the auto tranny would hold up to extreme rockcrawling and hard abuse.
My intention was to bring in a couple bj70 series for engine swaps for my 42 and 43 and was wondering if the 70 had a auto attached could I use it on the swap and is it reliable for mild-med offroading,I am only familiar with the auto in my wifes 62 and it seems to be a fairly good trans it has 280k and still funtions good ,ideally I would want a 5 spd trans but I don't always have that option.

I went down the AUTO (A440) path when I converted my LJ70- from 22R to 13B-T. The 1/2 cut came with the AUTO and I could not afford to spend anther $4000RM (USD 1200) at that time to buy a and put a manual tranny in as I had to buy the H55 separately. Bad mistake.

Mistake! The Auto always changed harsh (very harsh) and eventually after 2 years and from what I understand from the driver (my mate was driving) at the time the AUTO would not move on a steep muddy hill climb resulting in a slow rollover. On the return trip from this the AUTO overheated so we decided to put Rodneys A440 kit into the vehicle I spent $9000 on the parts and more to install it we had a auto shop install the parts and i ripped out the gearbox and installed it back in with my mechanik. The cooler went in along with TOYOTA auto oil. THe effect was immediate - harsh change never changed not rodneys fault. It pulled well and the 3rd gear lockup worked really well. Awesome in Malaysias crappy rush hour traffic. However, I could not handle it (it lasted 4 weeks) it started overheating going on the 5 minute run from home to (the trip from home to work is downhill all the way) work always overheating on a slight uphill slope at the only traffic light in the journey and overheating at other traffic lights despite the larger cooler and correct fluid and a a big fan pulling the air through and then I bit the bullet (last June) and went H55 5 speed manual. I bought 2 H55's one for this vehicle and one for the 1987 13B-T powered TROOPY. We put the soft clutch pedal in the LJ70 also. Well the difference amazing even with a dying engine the LJ70 with the 13B-T pulled like mad and was finally the evil/capable 4x4 I expected. Where ever I pointed it it went even pulling on one trip a very sick dead sticked LC II for 70K from 700 meters up and down muddy hills from the farest point in a forest. Even the winch when it was required worked so much better pulling it up slopes it could never do as an auto powered PTO.

I would never go AUTO on a 4x4 again. I have friends who compete and all use a mix of AUTOs and manual.

Then we pulled out the sick 13B-T and rebuilt it from ground up with 7M CT26 Turbo, 14B Timing gear and fuel pump and then modified the fuel pump and boost detector and new injectors. Transformation awesome ended up with a wheelspinning (on 35" SImex XT's) monster that travels most places in high range and even 2WD -

YEah the auto was greate for dangerous single log bridges and starting easy on hills and awesome downsteep hills due to the big DIESEL, But I would never go back to it.

for me 5 SPeed Manual only.
