Checking Tranny temp
I installed two senders one in rad hose and one in trans cooler line and a switch to check the temp from either sender. One guage installed two functions. Results are that steep hills and pulling the transmission temp preceeds water temp so it is the start of heating problems. RPM and shifting will help but not go away on a long hill until you back out. I would like to try a lock up switch for the other gears as I think the slippage from the lugging power of the diesel also contributes to heating problems. Just what I have found anyway.

okay, good info here.
if you can lock up the gears and dimish the heat being generated into the rad that will in turn keep the coolant a bit cooler on the long hills.
<of course this really doesn't help the actual head design in your particular rig but every bit helps overall>

when you are testing these settings what is the pyro reading?

this is a stand i am taking recently. the more i looked into the auto tranny the more i saw the problems..

Lack of servicing from new is the main problem and overheating . Take care of them and they last.
Plenty of H55f die young from the same causes.
The autos I have driven seem to suck the power though

over heating and piss poor cooling design, lack of a tranny temp gauge, lack of aux tranny coolers on the JDM models...

if you add an aux cooler, a temp gauge and not be stupid about the abuse you put it through then it will last a long time... esp behind a gutless L series engine.

I don't think mountains are killing the trannies, it's misuse in the mountains that I was speaking of.
Sure you could overheat a tranny in the flats with the right amount of abuse, but do you not think this is much more likely living in mountainous areas?

Personally, I am taking your advice with regards to an aux cooler in my 81. It seems that the OEM coolers are typically doing the job for the guys in the US...maybe that's all thats needed to get some longevity out of these units.

The valvebody upgrade would be nice too, but that's another story.

I did not abuse the AUTO after the RODNEY kit was installed and the AUTO cooler and in the 6k trip to work which was mostly DOWNHILL it overheated at the traffic lights which was a slight uphill slope. AT that point I gave up on the $20krm I had put into it and bought a H55F and never looked back. However the little AUTO in the 1KZ is magic.

I was unware they used an A440f behind the L engines.

I try and keep it under 900 post turbo. This I control with my foot. I towed a car on Dolly up from Van in cool weather and did Ok but would not attempt it in the heat of summer.
