Whilst I love driving manual, my knee is just not going to hold up. So as part of swaping out the old 3B for a 1HDT, I would convert to an auto as well.

So I have a couple of questions...

I'm starting with a BJ73, 3B and h55f. Transfer also has PTO.

I would like to save some money and use the transfer case off the h55f. Is an a442f the only / best option to bolt up to the 1HDT and my transfer case can easily bolt up to that?
I understand the engine mounts are a bit different, but is that also the case between the h55f and a442f (different mounts or cross member)?
With this combo I could still keep my PTO?

Cheers

So I'm getting closer to doing this. Have the 1HDT, but now looking at transmission options.
I understand that there are a few different models of a442's. Fully hydro, hydro with elec OD, elec.

Does anyone know the difference in models and which ones might be more suitable?
I would also like to confirm if I could reuse the transfer from my h55 gearbox, or better off getting a matching transfer with the Trans.

I am also in a similar situation.

Matching transfer (and drive shaft) 100% is the way to go.

To be honest, the easiest option is to source the engine and transmission combination as delivered from factory.
So if you can find a 1HDT with its matching transmission and all the buggerisation that comes with it, you will have a high chance of success. (Im assuming early 80 series?)
I am a believer that the reason the old girls are still on the road is because the complexity is minimal.
So if you add more systems and looms and ecu components, the reliability may suffer.
Likely the A442 would be the easiest option.
(extract from Compushift below:) Toyota/Lexus A442 COMPUSHIFT Transmission Controller - https://hgmelectronics.com/pages/toyota-lexus-a442-transmission-controller
There were many changes made to the A442 over the years..
  • Jan 1990 to Jul 1992 - Full hydraulic, Non-computerized.
  • Aug 1992 to Jul 2002 - Four solenoids running a throttle pressure cable (sometimes identified as a kick down cable).
  • Jan 1998 to Jul 2002 - Five solenoids with no throttle pressure cable (sometimes identified as a kick down cable).
If I had a stack of cash though, I would go for A750, and even then I would grab the matching engine

The overall cost seems to be what stops me from making a choice.
Currently it is cheaper for me to buy an entire late model FZJ105 with the 4.5 petrol (non dissy) for $4500 and shorten the chassis and drop the FJ73 body on top....
(Or BMW M57 conversion...........)

JDM HZJ73’s came with an automatic, I think it was the A442f. If you can find one of those it will bolt right to your 1HD-T and you’ll be able to use your factory split transfer case and OE driveshafts.

As I recall the 80-series has a different offset rear output shaft, so the transfer case won’t easily swap into a 70-series.

Cheers for the info.
The motor is from an 80 series and has been rebuilt. I was planning to upgrade my old BJ73 with it, which currently has an h55f (5 speed manual).

The more I look into it, the rarer the combo seems to be. Bj73 with conversion to auto plus 1hdt. If I'm still struggling to find the ideal match, I may just have to live with mating the h55 to the 1hdt.

Use this VIN JT111TJ80O7004664
To find you right matching auto gear box and transfer .
As this is from a 80 HDT with auto gearbox .
You should get info from Partsouq or Megazip

I have put it into a 78 .
Which has a similar engin bay
