I've been on the hunt for a good bench seat for the back of my 40 that's wide enough for 3 kids car seats. Found a local add on CL for a e350 van seat but its too wide by 3". Ive searched a few threads here and I haven't seen a lot of specific info for my situation. I know there's a few company's out there that make them but none specify weather you can fit 3 car seats across. If i can find one about 59-60" on top of the fender wells I think I can make it happen. Anybody have 3 kids and the same situation out there?

I have 3 under 7. One is still in the big forward facing harness. There are very few vehicles that will fit it and 2 boosters safelybin the same row. We also have a yukon and all three are tight in it. What type of seats are you using? a 40 doesn't have airbags so the front seat might be an option.

I would not do it, 3 kids seats I think are too wide, will put the two outer kids to close to the edge in my opinion for a vehicle like this. Not to mention it would have to go on top of the wheel wells adding to the danger.

Measure your three car seats. This website sells seats that are 40" wide and allegedly fit three kids. http://www.littlepassengerseats.com They are pricey though.

On a side note, the Bestop Trailmax II seat is also 40" on the bottom and 42" on the seat back. It will fit in between the wheel wells.

I have a little passenger seats third row seat in the back of my 60. There are two shoulder belts and middle lap belt. I'd say kids ~8 and under could fit three wide. Yes, pricey, but the build quality is outstanding and their customer service is great.

How wide is that?

I have a Suzuki Sidekick rear in mine. I have two car seats. I don't think it is possible or even safe to do three.

It's 42" and I just measured my 40 well to well and it's 41". Little seats would likely make one to fit. They're all custom. But three kids would be tight.

Agree with safety concerns by the way... Just wanted you to see the little seats product.

This option wouldn't work if you need 3 car seats anyway. I have 4 kids, ages 6-12. That's why I have the third row for the 60 and they take turns riding in the 40.

I have a Bestop seat and I get three kids in it. Sometimes I put a car seat in the middle and a kid on either side.

Great info and I appreciate it. I agree 3 car seats wide is tight but it works well in my 03 4-runner and I have the big car seats in that. I also have a 96 T100 and my wife found 2 britax seats for my 2 and 4 year old and a full backed booster for my 8 year old and they fit great, so I'm sure it can be done. Maybe the 2 and 4 in seats and the 8 YO in a 5 point like yours SouthBoston.

Why would there be increased danger with the seats mounted on top of the wheel wells? Just curious.

That's 3 wide and with one jump seat still installed. If I remove the jump seat and add a proper roll cage I think I'll be in business.

How many toes have they lost?

LOL wise guy Alex :)

It has a cover ... Well actually two... I got tired of fixing the leaks because the kids like to step on the heater cover... Made a step out of a door cover to protect the heater .... And their TOES :)

I once fit up a bench seat from a full size Chevy truck, it was wide enough to cover most of the wheel wells. Though I was not intending it for use for kids, as it sat too high. It would have been easy to mount.

I'm feeling lazy right now, it's dark outside, but I'm wondering about an Astro rear seat. There are two identical size seats behind the drivers seat. It would most likely have to go over the wheel wells, but our Astro rear seat will snugly fit three medium sized adults. There are even a few models of Astro seats that have two built in child seats. One of our Astros has one of those seats. The Astro seats have quick release latches, with a removeable socket set into the floor.

The center passenger has a lap belt only, which is fastened to the seat frame. The two outside passengers each have one end of their belt fastened to the seat frame along with the center passenger belts. The other end of each of their belts is a three point belt, but it is attached to the vehicle body so some fabbing for that part of the belt would be required.

I'm not sure how well one of these seats would fit, but I would think that it would be worth checking out.

Why do you need a seat? baby seats don't require the support of an actually seat, thus, you can make a frame to directly tie the seats to the floor. Once they grow up enough, replace the kid seats with a full size rear seat.

Plus, you can make it close to the floor since they don't have toes... yep, I chuckled about that.
