Welcome Boombapslappy, What kind of Tacoma are you going to sell? Im contemplating getting another one.

"Are you wanting a Cruiser for a DD, trail and DD, or just trail?"

It'll have to do both. Otherwise, I have to keep the wife's college car. If I do that, I could go for a trail only rig.

My 80 is my DD and trail rig, I had a 60 as my daily for 6-7 years, I miss the character......but an 80 with coils, 4 discs, fuel injection, ect.

It's a '97, 4x4, extended cab, 3.4 v6, automatic. Shoot me an email if you'd like to discuss.

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome J-bo

If it was me I would go with an 80 specifically an FZJ80 93-97............. JP

If I may?
Would some of you lay out the specifics of why 93-97? What does it add to earlier ones and what do later ones lose etc? Is there a Lexus equivalent and do the same years apply? Etc.

I'll probably sell Bonnie in '10 and be looking for a cheaper stateside 4x4 or AWD wagon. Of course it may find its way off road occasionally ;)
Might as well begin my education.

Bill the biggest reason for going with a 93 and up is simply factory lockers started them, but more than that they switched from the 3FE that came in FJ62's and the early FJ80's to the 1FZE which is probably the best inline 6 toyota ever produced.......

I am sure the 80 guys can got into much more detail, but those are the big ones

93 for everything JP has said...95 and up for the later tranny and some creature stuff. :)

From what I've read, I think I'll specifically search for a locked '95 to '97 TLC or LX450. Did any 450's come with lockers or should I stick to the 80?

yes 450's came with lockers as well............ informationjunky on here has a locked 450

Yep, locked....I was looking for an 80 and found my lx for cheaper, so add them to your search.

Thanks for the link! I've seen Slee's site but I hadn't found the other threads yet.

Will it be worth it in the long run to narrow the search even further and only consider 80's and 450's with lockers? Are the factory lockers better or just different than aftermarket ARB's and such?

I apologize if I'm asking questions that have been answered in another thread...

IMHO the e-lockers are fine for mild moderate and are a great value for the typical price differace in locked vs unlocked trucks. If your planning on 37" and up you might want to look at a unlocked to add arb's to (see alvocado).

It all comes down to what you want to do with it.

Yeah, if you stick to mild to moderate wheeling stock lockers are awesome. You start going extreme and that is where the issues come in.

OK, let me see if I'm following...the factory lockers would be sufficient for a DD/mildly built wheeler? If I want to go big, I'll need ARB's later anyway?

The truck will primarily be the DD between Williamston and Greenville. It'll be taken off road only when I begin hanging out with you guys on the regular and will probably never be used for "crawling". I don't forsee myself ever driving a trail where I would need a spotter. At least, not yet. After reading some of the threads, I just don't know if I have the marbles, much less, the money.

Thanks for all the help so far!

While true, the same can be said for many stock components. Any truly extreme (a term that differs from one person to the next) activities are going to find the weakest link(s) in a hurry.
