Hi all,

I'd appreciate photos of your factory/OEM/period correct inspired builds.

I am about to acquire a lovely, low mileage, triple locked HDJ81, in white. A reasonably young guy owns it, and only in the last 6 months he has thrown all sorts of money at accessories and mods, but it's not my cup of tea - Superior Engineering 4 inch lift, G-Turbo, intercooler, Superior arms, etc etc. It's just too aggressive as it sits, and I personally prefer a more "Grandpa Spec" 80.

Given the low mileage and the fact it is triple locked, I am wanting to baseline it essentially, and proceed to build a more period-correct 80.

My ideas are:

  • Remove the 4" coils, keeping the Superior Remote Reservoir shocks and other good bits etc, but lower it to a 2.5-3 inch lift (it's just too aggressive currently)
  • Remove the 35x12.5 tires on hideous aggressive alloys, and fit skinny 35"s (35x10.5) on some period correct wheels. Any ideas here? Old FJ steel wheels? Factory Alloys?
  • Remove the current winch bar and either fit a factory bumper, or ARB Deluxe.
  • Remove the top-mount intercooler and fit a font-mount; also removing the ugly bonnet scoop modified hood and fit a factory one.
  • Fit a Frontrunner roof platform (nice, square, period correct). Add some simple PRACTICAL hardware on it - Maxxtraxx, awning, shovel holder.
  • Simple DIY drawer/storage system - please post your ideas!
Thanks heaps

My son would love that. I'm with you. I'm busy right now removing 30+ years of grime from mine, so it looks new again. In white ;)

IMO, few wheels look better than the factory alloy wheels. Maybe a set and paint them to match your theme.

I'm in the process of starting a refresh on my '96 and agree with you, too many modern looking things just don't fit with the 80. I got the Gobi rack for the look, made of tubes and shaped like a rectangle, very nice quality.

I think you're on the right path and this will come together pretty well. I'd vote for less than 3" of lift, maybe 2".

I went for a Period Correct / Modern Build with my 80. It’s still in process!

How does it drive, as is?
