Hi All,
Yesterday I bought my 5th FJ40 for parts.. I want to take the steering column from it to put into my 4th 40, as it has a bent steering shaft as a result of an impact. I dont have the key for 5, so I'll need to swap the barrel over from 4. I'm aware of the procedure to remove the barrel when the key is available, but how do I get it out without the key?

I would recommend picking it...or find someone who can. I will be interested in this too. I have am ignition with no key I need to get into as well and do not have the correct set for picking ignitions.

I had to do this on a ranger once. I just drilled out the cylinder with a 3/8 bit just as deep as the key goes in. Then once all the pins are gone you can turn the cylinder with a flathead and remove it as with a key. Pretty easy. Good luck.
Google "drill ignition" and you'll see.;)

... just use a small punch and hammer.... give it a good smack and it'll push the little pin down enough to get it out..... whether its reusable or not remains to be seen...sometimes yes and sometimes no:frown:

I know you got it out already, but I thought I would tell you how I resolved my issue. When I bought my truck it had no key. It cost me $30 to have a mobile locksmith make an impression of the key by putting a blank in the cylinder and rotating it. Each time the pins would make a mark on the key. He would file a little off the key in the spots where the pins marked the blank. Within ten or fifteen minutes, he handed me a working key for the truck. Well worth the price if you ask me because I couldn't access the gas door either and the same key works both.

Thanks All,
I got it out.. I was playing around with it, pusing the pin down and gently levering the barrel with a flatblade screwdriver and to my surprise it popped right out.. I didnt have to be rough at all..

What pin MATE ?!? I just turned mine to Lock like an Idiot and now it's ... well locked. Would the barrel of an older FJ40 work with the newer pushbutton system I have on this P/S column ?

I'm not sure I understand your problem completely.. I had a spare column that I needed to get the lock barrel out of.. To remove the barrel, you need the key insterted and turned to the accessory position.. Theres a small retaining pin that when pressed in allows the barrel to come out.. Without the key in, this pin cant be pressed in..

I'm not sure how to unlock a locked lock without a key, I think this is the job for a locksmith?

I found my old barrel without the pushbutton wouldnt go into the newer pushbutton column.. There seems to be a rib cast into the barrel preventing it sliding in.. Everything else appears to be ok.. I wasnt keen on modifying the barrel for the sake of getting it to fit, I just put the second key on the keyring.. I dont think the pushbutton would work on the older barrel anyway.. Not that this would be a problem for me, I think theyre a silly idea..

If you mod the old barrel to fit the newer column, post up and let us know..

No, you do understand it, I got a P/S with a steering column and I wanted to avoid changing over the entire mechanism (where you have to drill through that shear bolt). The seller supplied it the P/S column ON position so i suspect I could have just pushed that pin - there is only one pin I can see, recessed in the side so that must be it.

Now that is locked however... well if I can't change that over that sucks... maybe I take both to a locksmith and ask what to do. As this is not my main rig :D I get to work at it every now & then, but hopefully I will look at this in Dec / Jan / Feb

Will take some pics of whgatever happens...

Thanks for your help

I know nothing about drilling a shear bolt? My spare column had the lock in the locked position.. I managed to get the barrel out by carefully levering it with a medium sized flat blade screw driver.. Read further down the thread.. I dont think this is supposed to happen, but it did for me..
