I’m not saying anything. That is simply the oil filter info from the link provided by White Stripe about oils. It’s a massively long read this was the part on filters
That is the only Toyota filter he tested and his results.

I’m still ok with OEM.

FWIW - this is information.
It's interesting the conclusions drawn from the same information.
540ratblog has a very negative opinion. Read his blog and obviously a very passionate, highly skilled engineer.
However, he is also heavily biased against Toyota engineering for some reason. So, he does have that bias when analyzing results.

My takeaway?
With Toyota, my experience has been to stick with OEM. Which I will continue to do.
Obviously a very hot topic...

Here are two very detailed reads on YDDZ3 specific filter comparisons:

maybe a cause of filter damage?
I work at Napa, and use Napa oil filters on everything... The problem he had was not with the little gasket that seals up against the block. It was the internal gasket. OEM filters use a black one, Napa filters are generally orange. What happen is during assembly the gasket gets slightly moved, then it gets finished up. Thrown into a box, and out the door. When he turned his rig, the internal gasket was blocking the way into the filter, and the bypass couldn't even have helped ya here. It spewed out between the seal, where the weak spot was. I have seen a couple of them come through our store. It's not just napa filters either, napa filters are by wix of course, and I have seen, Wix, Fram, Purolator, and even a Hastings (amsoil) filter like that.

One thing everyone needs to consider, when you go to a parts house. Double check your parts please! People try and do some crazy crap, to return there "used" parts. And sometimes they get by, and then we pull them off the shelf. You take it home, it's used, broken, etc...

You also wouldn't beleive how they ship some of the dropships. I've seen pallets of waterpumps, that look like they thrown it off a clif a couple hundred times.

Check your parts at the parts house, can save you time, money, and alot of frustration. I always check all parts before the customer walks out the door. But when were extremely busy, somtimes we just don't have that kinda time.

I have not read his whole blog. Genuinely asking what makes you feel he is biased? I've only read the info on the top motor oils and briefly read some stuff about gear oils. I'm curious how he rated oem Toyota oil.

UOA trumps opinions.

He's obviously highly qualified, so I am willing to hear him out. A lot of good info on that blog, thanks.

from his blog-on the topic of oil wear and pressure:
Toyota got it wrong……….again, which is no surprise. I have NEVER been impressed with Toyota Engineering. Because they do so many things wrong, or at least not as good as they should be done. Buyer beware!

Obviously I highly disagree with his opinion on Toyota, but that's ok.
Interesting wormhole, oil filters...

Is UOA an oil analysis? I think the issue isn't so much filtration as it is build quality and defects to potentially harm the motor.

UOA = Used Oil Analysis. Anyone who would say that about Toyota engineering is phishing. Not because Toyota is without flaws but because in the world of machinery there is nothing perfect but Toyota comes closer than the majority and anyone who can’t see that has selective sight or they simply despise huge corporations that are extremely successful and therefor wealthy and highly influential.

I’m not big on oem filters but after the write up I saw that included the -yzzd3 in a dissection comparison of several filters I figured I might as well use it. Additionally, it is surprisingly affordable, easily obtained and if Toyota believes in it then they should have no issues with replacing an engine that their filter destroyed, especially one of their own engines.

Since there were conflicting points about the YZZD3 construction, I dremeled one open. 5k miles and almost a year on the engine. Filter media is wrapped around a metal tube and epoxied (?) on either end. It is not tapered as an online reviewer stated about another model. The bypass valve is a coil spring assembly.

I know that this is an old thread and I want to add that I just got my 1997 FZJ80 back after being without it for over 5 years.. It all started with my timing chain breaking and trying to locate a head due to mine being warped, after the guy finally got the timing chain on and returned it to me, I didn't drive that rig 3 weeks before I'm hearing a knock in my motor, I called the guy, he came to my house, stuck his finger in the oil and you could see metal. My truck sits for another year before I finally locate a specialist that can look at it, I had the rig towed close to 200 miles. The diagnosis was "oil starvation from NAPA Gold oil filter" that cause major problems, ended up paying close to 8k for a rebuilt motor and installation. I really took a hit, was thinking of contacting WIX but I know, they're not going to do anything. Live and Learn...

You could always try...if you hae a real mechanic that diagnosed that as the failure and still have the filter (wasn't thrown away) submitting the form may be worth a few min of your time on the off chance it works

Lots of us either diagnosed ourselves or didn't have the filter which makes more difficult. Sorry for the destruction....seems like these keep popping up every so often.

Wanted to let you all know that I've filed a claim with Wix and I'll keep you all posted as to the outcome. The place that replaced my motor did have the filter and they've sent it back to me.

Good LUCK!! I mean that sincerely. This thread was started in 2017 ... I jumped in on the thread in 2018 because I had a total loss of indicated oil pressure with a WIX filter installed on my 97 LX450. After contacting the local WIX representative here in Canada ... I was asked to send in the filter (along with a sample of the oil iirc) WIX eventually reported 'no fault found' with the filter and when asked to return the filter they said they had thrown it away. That was that.... oh yes -- I forgot ... the local rep actually offered me a free case of WIX filters ....I couldnt believe my ears -- it was like being asked if you would like a case of herpes!!

(I am back to OEM ... or Mobil 1 filters only)

I'm so sorry to hear "no fault found" and like me, you lost an engine due to a faulty WIX filter, I really don't expect them own up in my case either, although the filter demolished my engine. I've also been asked to send in the filter.

I don't know if the genuine filters are so amazing. I use Sakura oil and fuel filters for my 1HZ, and "Full" branded air filters. I doubt Toyota has a factory somewhere that just makes oil filters. They OEM that out to somebody, probably not WIX.

For the low cost of a decent filter and oil to go with it, it doesn't cost much to buy a case of both and stay consistent.

As far as the various lawyerings, and of who said what at O'Reilly's part desk, it does seem a bit of a miss now. The cost of being prepared here would have been very low.

Decided to bump my old thread, partly as a continual PSA for new folks and partly because I realized I never really updated my eventual outcome.

After several months of back and forth with WIX I decided to just chalk it up to an expensive lesson learned and fix it all on my dime. In the end I just wanted to get my 80 back on the road regardless of who paid for it. Ended up finding a donor motor just a couple hours away with ridiculously low miles and had it swapped in almost five years ago to the day around January 2018. It’s been great ever since.

Glad you got her back on the road. I know you missed her.

Interesting that this 51348 used on a Camry had a tore anti-drainback valve, and loose glue found in the canister after service.

I will throw a couple other Toyota part numbers out here, listed for coil pack non-US 1998+ 1FZs;

FZJ105's, 1999-2008 FZJ7x & 98-2006 FZJ80's
15600-41010 made in Japan, old part#
90915-TD004 supersedes above, made in Thailand, large style filter

98-2006 FZJ80's
90915-20004 made in Thailand

Cross reference part numbers here, not all will show up FYI.

ALL filters above also cross reference to 2UZ & 5VZ among others. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
