What do i need? I have a 1993 Landcruiser. I dont care if im stuck off a cliff, i want to be able to pull myself out of worst case scenarios.. I 4x4 with my family and occasionally by myself. What winch do you guys recommend??? would an 8000# do everythingi need? Do i need to go WAY bigger?

How much does your 80 weigh when loaded for the trail? What front bumper do you have? ARB? What winches fit your bumper?

What is the price difference on a 9K and 10K Warn?

A hunting/fishing buddy of my dad who has a 1972 FJ40 explains it this way:

"When you have a regular truck and get stuck, it costs $50 for a regular tow truck to come get you out. When you do all sorts of crazy s*** to your truck and try to push it to the limits, thaaat's when you get up to the $300 stuck..."

Point of the story: how you use your truck will dictate. What kind of trails do you go on? What modifications have been made to your truck? How good are your driving skills? What do you use your truck for?

Currently lifted with 315's on it. I will have a front bumper, and a rear bumper. Weight wise i would just be guessing. No clue what these pigs weight.

I like mud, woody trails, occasional rocks but not that big a fan.

2x optima red top + warn 16.5ti(whith xp motor:D)

not sure about the optimas but X2 in the Warn 16.5 and run a 12K winch in the rear .. trust me .. !

Yeah, if you're gonna do mud and stuff like that, the big guns are mandatory!

If money is no object buy a new 8274 and contact gigglepin.com and buy their brake upgrade and all their other little amazing upgrades, then extend the drum and put 200 feet of your choice of cable or rope (i prefer rope). If using rope then have the drum extended and decrease the diameter of the drum to 1.5 inch solid shaft. The rating on the 8274 is 8000 pounds, I am told it is a 10,000 pound winch but derated, it's 16000 if snatched.

If you decrease the drum diameter by half the pull on the first wrap should be 16000, use a snatch block and you have 32,000 pounds. It has a mechanical brake on it - if you have to do something retarded like pull your truck straight up you will want to do it with something that has a mechanical brake like the 8274. You can even twin motor it and upgrade the motors as well, lower the gearing too for faster lines speeds or more pull.

Have fun!

Check out my video on youtube of my modified 8274, nothing special but my truck is in clay to the bumper, with 36x13's on a straight line pull, I'd estimate that I am exceeding 10,000 pounds on that pull.

Ishobie, you realize just looking at that truck makes us staties jealous?

What mods have you done to your 8274? Hard to tell by the vid.

Thanks, Dan

You can get them in the states - just have to be resourceful!

Nothing serious mod wise, just removed the drum, cut out the 3" drum and replaced with a 1.5" solid bar with a hole drilled in it to anchor the rope, also extended the drum 3 inches. Dumped the s*** solenoids and have an albright solenoid I ordered from the UK, sealed the entire winch up with silicone because I play in the water. Also upgraded the brake disc with one from gigglepin as the s*** warn disc kept coming apart.

I have the winch off now so I am going to drill and tap the top and bottom so I can drain the fluid and fill it with ease.

I'd eventually like to buy a new 8274-50 and start the mods all over with solenoid actuated freespool, upgraded gigglepin brake system etc etc. I dont need speed for competitions but it would be nice to have it a little faster.

stay away from the 8k, go minimum 12k if you really plan on getting stuck. i wouldn't run less than 9.5 on an 80. the addage is to figure on your weight times 1.5 minimum. my 80 loaded up is 6300lbs.

i had an 8k that i transferred over from another rig and in deep snow (up to the bottom of the winch), it barely budged. i scored on an m15 from a fellow mudder. mounted it and the next day, buried it in the snow and had to pull it out sideways. not even a groan. yesterday, snowrun and i went wheeling and i again buried it almost to the tops of the tires. again, not even a groan.

Lets not forget the extras you will need;
  • Snatch block
  • Tree saver
  • Hi Lift
  • Pull Pal
  • Clevis pins
  • Recovery points on your rig.
  • Traction Mats
  • Shovel - Axe
  • Jack points on truck (sliders).
  • Winch line extension
  • Tire plug kit and air source.

.....

I got the experience with a M15K on a side of my 12K both in 60 series .. both in similar muddy circunstances, my 12K did a better job than this ( and maybe was just this one or the instalation ) one ..

Late this M15K dies . . burn motor and after repair ( severals and can't tell about the quality of labor or parts ) broke the clutch ..

the 16.5ti it's just a beast .. I wish I can buy one ..
