I want my 80 to last forever, but...

But many of you want the GX next. Isn't it essentially the 4runner with a lot of electronics, higher repair costs and a vehicle that most people would dare driving it if there was a possibility that it would get scratched??

Seems for the "utilitarian" vehicle....the 4runner (trail edition or not) would be the vehicle of choice when all aspects are considered??

IMHO
Advantages of GX460 vs 4runner:
Built in Japan vs US
1UR-FE V8 vs V6
7 seats w/ CRAWL, KDSS vs Trail Edition 4runner only seats 5
Tows 6500 lbs vs 4700 lbs

The 4runner is pretty sweet too.

NEVER HAPPENING....

:(

Because I only know of maybe 5 people with the funds to buy a $70K base bones utility truck that is based on 1980's technology.

I was thinking they were closer to 30-40k, what makes the 70 so expensive? Import/chicken tax fees? I would think the 1980 tech would be cheaper to produce.

Wouldn't ever part with my 80... My commuter is a 2011 CT200h complete with LED Headlights, Pre-Collision, Leather and Nav....and it the ugliest color on the planet...At the time they had stop shipping CT's due to the earthquake in Japan and I needed a car so I leased this. Every time I fill it up I just smile $33 bucks. The 80 rules my weekends.

I already have a 2001 acura integra that I try to use as my daily driver, but my lexus is parked outside my office right now :)

My problem here is rust, rust will kill my truck before anything else. I could park it over the winter, but I have more fun driving it in the winter than the summer. The logging roads behind my house are a lot more fun with 2 feet of snow on them.

My eventual goal, is to buy a rust free 80 from the Southern states and either ship it to Maine or fly down and drive it back. I will then start tearing that apart and rustproofing it from the ground up. Over a period of a few years, I will swap everything over and that will be the new cruiser. I should work on getting a proper garage before I even start though.

All good points. Forgot runner is only 6 cyl. now.

That was enough to convince me. I will join the GX bandwagon as well.

...and if your buddies pull a prank on you and straps dynamite to your car, your safe!

I love my 80 and have been a fan ever since they came out, but when I was looking to buy one this past winter I almost bought a VW Touareg instead. Those are really sweet! I was looking at the 5.0 liter 320-HP 550-ft/lb V10 Diesel with the 6" air suspension and built in compressor/air tank. An '04 diesel can be had for around 14k which is more than I spent on my '97 80LC, but only by a few grand. They're supposed to be very capable off road and the interior style, features and comfort is really in another league.

Somehow it works with the MB G-class except replace $70k with $100k. Maybe they can throw some nice leather seats and factory 22" wheels, upcharge like crazy, watch the celebrities line up for it.

Not really a comparison there as to how they drive. Driven a fairly new 2006ish, if I remember correctly, 70 series wagon and a G wagen from the same period. In terms of DD it there is no way any sane person would pick the 70 over the G.

Now if you are looking for off roading ability that is another story. But as Beno said not many people are going to pay 70k for an off-road toy or work truck when there are so many other options for under half that price to be had in the US that have a much bigger towing capacity and payload capacity.

Back to the OPs point. I don't think i'll ever get rid of my 80. I may at some point change the engine and other things but the look and character of the truck sitting on the 39's can't be matched. I do DD the truck right now buy my commute is negligible. If I was looking to replace it as DD duties i'd just get a nice comfortable commuter car and keep the 80 also. The only way i'd get a 100 is if my 80 burned down and there were nobody selling any.

What you want to find with the VW is one that has had the Cats already replaced.

You have to pull the motor to replace them, and just about only VW dealers have mechanics that will want to do that for them because they are so rare and then not all VW dealers can and will (most of the time they will ship them somewhere else to another dealer).

They have two major problems that can happen.
The Cats, which will happen at some point.
And something with the Cams can go wrong but isn't a thing that most likely will happen like the Cats.

Both happened at the same time on my buddies. And think it was something like 11 months later, because first VW dealer messed up,.And who knows how much $$$ later but id say his cost even with the mess up that caused it to need a new engine later he basically had a new engine, new cats and performance cams in the rig.
Was putting out north of 700 ft/lbs and got around 25 mpg hwy.

He sold it shortly after though as 2 years seems to be his limit on DD cars.
He sold it for dirt cheap and I would have bought it in an instant if I had the cash. It wheeled well, towed great, got great gas mileage and was pretty damn fast to boot.

80

My 80 has about 276,000 miles on it. She still runs good. I think about this subject alot. When the motor goes do I rebuild? At the present I think that is what I would do. 7-8K for a new motor. Tranny would have all those miles but it is still really smooth. What kind of truck could I buy for 7-8K? Also when you guys think of your next truck your not thinking about depreciation. Most of the 80s are already depreciated out. I think it would be cheaper to hold on to these beasts if possible.
Of course you need another car, truck for better gas mileage.

I was going to post a separate thread about Jeeps, but didn't know where it would be appropriate to post it...so I figured I would bring this thread back from the dead.

I have never liked the Jeep brand or any of there vehicles other than the exteriors of the wranglers.

Doing more research last night it seems like the rubicon is a hell of a beast...??

Locking front and rear diffs, electronic swaybar disconnects, Dana 44 axles. (Lol in truth I have know idea what a Dana 44 axle is, but sounds cool).

Anyway, is there any vehicle that comes near, out of the box, to the rubicon. I checked out the land cruiser website and was not impressed with its "off road" accessories-there really wast much-unless I missed the off-road tires, built in winch, locking diffs....

Any of the Rovers compete?

Please help me...I don't want a Jeep....but it seems like it may be in my future.

I was hanging around at the local 4wheelparts store and chatting with the store manager, I asked him about the jeeps because I do think the JKs are bitching looking. His comment is that they are great if you put about 25k in upgrades on them. Most people drive it around for show but if you want to wheel them with anything 33 or bigger then the axles have to be upgraded, oh and all u joints, and gears and many other things I don't even remember. But he did say they love them because the jeeps gives them tons of business.

It's because since the 60 the Land Cruiser has slowly been turned into a Soccer mom vehicle in the US. With a $70,000 price tag no one really thinks of these as Off-Road vehicles anymore. They're capable, sure, but they aren't a pure explorer like the 40, 55, or 60. People have had to Mod 80's to really do it but it was more capable than 100's out of the box and now 200's are so large that I might as well just get a Sequoia. If the FJ Cruiser had a Solid axle on it with Toyota's "over engineering" I think it would beat the hell out of any Jeep out there. It almost does. But imagine a "Rubicon" Edition FJC with a solid front. If Mr. T would make that Vehicle I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Just adding a solid axle to the FJ would beat Jeep... Look at the FJ a failed attempt to compete so the axed the production. Toyota needs to make a 4dr off-road vehicle yes with a solid axle but removable doors and top. Don't get me wrong I love Toyota products but they are falling behind... No diesels in their pickups (Nissan is going with cummins engines), no sports car, no 4wd SUV with removable top and doors.... Ok I feel better :)

From what I understand jeep can't keep up with wrangler demand. Selling over 140k units a year, and no one will sell a vehicle in NA to compete? It would stand to reason Toyota would want a piece of the action.just make a modern 40 series and make us all happy.
