88 FJ62, 3" $OR comfort ride Lift. Currently sits on 33" BFG AT's.
I want 35" BFG MT KM2's.
What can I do? I don't want to spring over. I've spent the money on a lift 5 years ago, and I don't want to shell out more for a new lift...if possible.
With your current 3" lift I would add a body lift. Fairly inexpensive and then you can go from there. You may find that you need longer shackles, extended bump stops, trimming, or any combination of those.
I would personally hate to cut my metal. I would intentionally limit my flex over cutting up my cruiser.
You can fit 35's on a 3" lift but it won't flex at all. Probably wouldn't even turn lock to lock. So be prepared for the other things to make it work.
I'm all for big tires, but where do you want to go that you can't go now? If you can go everywhere you want, you're already done. Drive and be happy.
35s (or 37s or 40s or 42s) take progressively larger and more expensive mods to work right. Not only do you need the lift, but you need the gears, the lockers, the axles, the double reduction range boxes, etc.
If you are not willing to do those mods, you shouldn't start down that path.
On a small lift, big tires are going to rub.
I have seen a 60 with a 5 inch spring under lift do well on 35s without cutting up the body, so it is possible.
Since you have a 62, and assuming stock gears and drivetrain, you are already way outside the sweet spot of your gearing. Which means the next step is regearing your diffs, then lifting more, then getting the bigger tires.
OME medium lift with a MAF shackle reversal. About 5 inches total. It rubs occasionally off road. I need to add some extended bump stops and it will be perfect. 35/12.5/15 on 15X8.5 rims with 3.25 inches backspacing. I wanted to keep it low. It is a dog on hills on the highway. Gears are in my near future.
G'day I've got a hj61 on 35's 2" Dakar springs 2" body lift sua very minor rubbing in heavy off road conditions not noticeable when driving but u can see where it rubs on the front of the inner gards
That is my goal too, for my FJ60. I have gathered some parts, FJ62 axles with 4.10 gears, 35x10.5x15 on aluminum rims. I also have 33"s so I can run those if the 35's just won't fit or if I don't like the rubber overdrive and don't feel like re-gearing again.
I haven't decided on SOA or SUA yet. I think I am leaning toward SUA however.
I am hoping a CCOT HFS or OME heavies with a extended shackle will work. I have some CCOT 2.5" shackles and got about 2" lift out of those so if I get a 2.5-3" spring I should be able to get 5" lift. If I need more I would throw on a 1" body lift.
Where does everyones 35's rub, front on springs, or fenders or ?, or in the back on the fender?
I would look into extended lift shackles if you do not have a longer shackle on it already. That would be the easiest and quickest way to get a little more lift I think, then body lift.
It does rub inside the rear wheel arch above the chassie only minor and on the front inner gard I put 2" shackles in the rear only because the springs were saging when loaded not to do with the tyres no rubbing on the front springs been running this setup for the last 60000 kms with no dramas will post some pics tomorrow when it's light again
I have 35" tyres. I have OME springs, a 2" bodylift and extended shackles. It rubs a little. You can get away without the extended shackles, but it will rub a little more. Extended bump stops - maybe 1" would be the go.
I changed the diff ratios to 4.56. I have a 2H turbo and 5 speed manual. If I was doing it again I would go with 4.88 gears.
I am currently running 35's KM/2's on a 1985 FJ-60 and yes I do have occasional contact rub on full flex in moderate/severe off road situation. The rub is only on the inner fender and at full turn on both inner fenders I will either trim about 1 inch off the fenders or install an additional 1/2 inch of extension in the bump stop. To achieve this I lowered the gear ration to 4:11 from the 3:7something stock , Installed 2 1/2 inch heavy heavy springs, and extended shocks one inch extended shackles and a one inch body lift. In addition a 2 inch extension bump stop was installed. Total lift calculates to 4 1/2 inch with a 2 inch drop in bump stop. Works ok but still need to tweak the bump stop or trim the inner fenders. But I think the big difference in my lift is the backspace on the rims for the tires I wanted to run 17 inch rims and got a 2 inch backspace rim that moved the entire tire outward in the fender, and lessened the contact that many others report with 35's and small lifts. Of course now I have to fit some fender flares. Just my .02 worth
