I want 35's... (2 Viewers)

Well, here's my question. I have seen FF FJ80 axels with factory e-lockers for $600. I haven't seen FJ62 axels for cheaper than twice that (without lockers). So, can I put the wider axels on the 62? Or because because it's wider will drivelines not match up, brake lines, etc.? Or could I weld spring perches on and extend brake lines and whatever else? Or, after all the mods needed to accommodate 80 axel would it still be cheaper to find 62 FF?

Sorry for all the questions...just trying to get as much answered as I can. I guess the tires really are the easy part, it's deciding suspension setup that is the hard part.

I should mention that the price reference for 62 axels above is only one vendor which had axel. If anyone knows of place to get said 62 FF for cheaper, please advise.

There already is a listing in the FJ40 section Faq.

I'll get it on here as well

Man, that is a good price with the e-locker. I think if it is going in an un cut truck it may be too wide. You could get really deep back spacing rims to make it work. Put 2" wheel spacers on each side of the front to make it match width wise. But then you have to spend $ on rims, mounting, balancing, and wheel spacers, spring perches. Might add up more than your fj62 FF axle.

You could go with a fj40 FF rear and add a 1.5" wheel spacer to the rear to get it to match the front width. You would still need to redo the spring perches however.

Man-a-free use to sell them for $800 back in the 90's.

Here's another idea, can I put an 80 third with e-locker into the front axel of my 62? What mods would be necessary?

Um, as soon as you have 35's, you'll want 37's. ask me how I know.

Yes, bolts right in and matches everything, just make sure it has the same ring and pinion ratio as your fj62, and wire it up of course.

You might be able to have an axle shop take that FZJ80 FF axle and have it shortened. You might look into that. Might be cheaper than a fj62 FF axle plus you get a e-locker. Make sure it is not a 100 series axle. Could still work but you would need different spider gears (possibly the ones from your fj62 third) and the R&P would probably be 4.30.

$400-600 is fair for just the third member with e-locker alone, so you get a cheap to free axle to do with as you please. Hell, put your fj62 third back in it and sell the FF axle complete as a non e-locker axle and get some to most of your money back.......free e-locker........score! Everyone wants a FF rear and it should not be too hard to find a buyer if you sell it.

If you have got the extra cash for it, grab it! If it was up here I would grab it. They are hard to find. I am planing on making a FJ65 pickup and would not mind the extra width because I will have no rear fenders. I could get the IFS hubs on the front and spacers to make it match width.

Just caught our thread... I'm running the 4.5" Mojave SUA lift with shackle reversal from MAF on 35" KM2s. Trimmed fenders and no rubbing. May have enough room for 37s. That said, with a 3 inch lift, 35's should fit well if you install a shackle reversal kit up front (it adds an inch or so) and level off the back to match with new shackles or an add a leaf or both.

I am afraid of this too. I know as soon as I put 33's on my pickup I knew I wanted 35's. Now I have have the 35's and will be putting the larger lift on it soon, but I have a feeling that in a year or two that it will just lead to a SAS and 37-38's and a duel t-case set up. If the new lift just doesn't cure it then I will keep collecting parts until I can make it happen.

I hope I don't have to go down this path with my FJ60 too.

Hey Bert88

That's not an ARB for a 60 series is it? Looks like it may be for a 4Runner or something. Sits up a lot higher than normal.

/hijack]

35's look good on 60's, but for my use I just don't need em.

That looks like the newer style of ARB for the FJ60. They don't make the old style any more.:crybaby: I like the old one better. I wish I had one.

Pic of old style.

OK resume tire discussion now.

Its a tacoma bumper from a few years back. Guy hit a deer and insurance replaced the bumper so he gave it away free. Modified the stock mounts to get the position high and tight and welded them to the frame. Body of the bumper still detaches at the mounts. Cut the fenders where the bumper wraps around. Worked out better than I first expected.

Hijack over.

Well, I have been mulling over these great ideas, and I've come up with another one. I think I'm going to consider dumping all aforementioned ideas and convert suspension to coil overs from an 80.

I followed the build thread of a muddier who did it a few years ago, so the tricky part will be finding the donor 80, with e-lockers if possible.

So you are just going to use the 80's suspension? Our are you going to use the entire frame?

I think just the suspension and make mods to my frame as needed.

That's gonna be a lot of mods.
