A couple days ago I was bored and needed something to do so I went outside and thought hey I'll start blacking the LC out. So I took the side vents off and started sanding them and painted the rear vents. I realized the front vents were molded in silver plastic and the the charcoal/black color was added on top of the silver(at least it appeared that way to me). I decided I couldn't get ride of the silver so i just roughed it up a bit and primed it really good. The vents are done and I'm thinking about starting on the grill today, not sure though.

When i am finished I will post pictures.

Looks good my vents are next on my list, wondering about doing the door handles.
 
I thought about it but i am too stupid to figure out how to take the window cranks off the door to get the panel off.

I recall someone saying the Tercel handles are the same except they're black. I'd do a search but I'm too lazy and like the chrome.

They are a pita. The window crank is on a spline with a clip holding it on there. If you push in the fabric and clear washer, look to the shaft and rotate the window crank till you see a horseshoe shaped clip. You have to pry the clip up till the it allows the window cranked to be pulled staight off. If you have a pick set it is easier.

Or go scrapping around in there with a small flat screw driver. Then the door panel pops off with its push(snap clips) that hold it on. You can use a wide flat screw driver to get them out. But pull gentle or they rip out of the cardboard that the door panel is construted of.....

I thought the old trick with a towel or rag works best. Put it under the crank and it will pop the clip off - watch out it gets lost easy.

anyone have a source for the plastic clips the screws go into around the headlight bezels? mine are 20yr old rotting nasty and need replace...

just found out my best friend has a contract pending to sell his P&B shop. sheesh, there goes my free lift and all my inventory for reasonable repairs, my paint booth and all the loaner tools in one quick swoop... and my free coffee!

the fool thinks he is gonna retire... after he spends a few weeks locked up in the house with his old lady, i am sure he will be doing something else besides mowing the lawn and watchin' the tube. that or they'll have to put him in a rubber room somewhere. if i had to live with his wife, i would already be in that white body suit with my arms tied around my back strapped to the bed with a football helmet on.

gonna have to find a new best friend who has an air conditioned garage with all those perks.

seriously, get to know a guy who owns his own P&B shop... they are the greatest guys in the world and would do anything to help you out. this guy won't even charge me to tow the cruiser and i call him before AAA. i have to buy him lunch all the time to try to kinda keep even. visit a couple and ask a few questions. kiss up a little, take the guy to lunch. it worked for me for 20 years.
 
easiest way to get the handles off is to use a set of small needle nose pliers with a bent tip.

something like this:

they are usually cheap and you can reach around the back of the handle and pull out the clip. i never got the towel thing to work - tried a bunch of different kinds.

as for the door handles - not sure that i'd mess with them unless you use something like rhino line. otherwise, anything you paint them with is just going to wear off and really look like crap. just my opinion of course.

sl33py - those little grommets are only available from toyota - specifically SOR from what i can tell. you might try calling CDan to see if he has some. i was going to buy some but really hate dealing with SOR for small purchases.

Try a pick n pull yard. I have sereral for my 60. They are on all model toyota. usually just walt out with them in my pockets. ; )

Those tires are 33 x 9.50 r15s. They came on it from the PO. I went to the tire shop here in town and he said that there were very few Manufacturers that make a 33 x 9.50s and that they were very expensive so needless to say when these wear out a different size tire will replace them, luckily for me it appears they have less than 500 miles on them as the short 1 mile drive I took last week finally broke the rubber nipples in between the treads.

No lift yet....thinking about the MAF AALs.

The paint is the the cheap stuff at Walmart. Something like 96 cents per can. I used Krylon Primer under it. I know it will probably peel on the grill and bezel especially if i take it offroad in the trees but since the paint is cheap i can just touch it up really quick.

I used numerous coats of paint and primer on all the pieces so that there would be less peeling but from what i have read peeling is inevitable.

i tried paint and it didnt' last, so i went the cheap bedliner route. works better, but even cheap bedliner will flake off.
 
Use an adhesion promoter and precleaner/dewaxer made for plastics before the finish coat. Try SEM products, they are very good. I dyed my interior trim pieces on my Dodge ramcharger years ago, and it looks the same as the day I did it. All while parked 24/7 in the AZ sun.
 
Looks sweet. Next, you need to pull off your side marker light covers, wet sand them, and then spray em with tint. I know it sounds gay, but I bet it would look tight.

And take advantage of that sweet Aframe house of yours... How far up do you think you could climb it?
 
I've been liking the blacked out look for awhile. I was thinking I may wait till I get the Wagon painted and have the vents, mirrors, license plate light, and anything else, done with the paint they use. I'd leave the chrome "Land Cruiser" parts.

For fun today, I painted my exhaust tip black. Looks better than the plain steel.

lunyou: Looks really nice! The cheap paint at WM is made by Krylon (or so I was told). It is pretty darn good paint. Not as good as the Rustoleum Professional but that stuff is expensive.
 
Easiest way I've found for the clips is. . .

get a piece of mutton cloth (muslin) or similar loose weave cloth wrap it around winder shaft behind trim plate and give it a twist and presto it should go pop. First one is worst till you find the technique. I have a proper tool for doing this and have not used it in years due to the ease and speed of using a bit of cloth.
