for the clutch master order a brake master kit and toss the residual valve out of the kit. the brake and clutch are same parts inside with the brake master having the residual valve. the brake kit is cheaper than the clutch kit. that is saying that its the correct early master and not the later style. if the inside of the master is scored from the piston being stuck order a oem brake master pull the residual valve and swap the front cap where the line goes in. or just do that from the start and don't try to rebuild. your about 120-140 for a new oem master or 30-50 for a rebuild kit depending what the inside of the master looks like. if it has the tin cup also swap that over but replace both washers that mount the tin cup to the master.

One more question, I’m working on ordering parts for the brake/tail lights. I need to source the buckets. Do anyone have any idea where to start? Also, it looks like the red/orange combo are original and not the red/red? I would like a crusty pair but that seems like a long shot.
Buckets will be tough to find. Hopefully someone has a set!

Good info here on lenses and gaskets. $OR has them too.

Here’s the key info:

As far as the brakes are concerned…if funds allow?

I’d get a set of disc brake axles.

Then make the upgrade to City Racer prop valve, 80 series disc/drum booster.
1975+ dual circuit hardline tee-piece. All new hard and soft lines with all fittings upgraded to 10mm (if they’re still 9mm?). I can’t remember what year Toyota changed from 9mm to 10mm. I’ve got a ‘63 and ‘67 and get little details mixed up.

With brakes I look at it like this:
Two is one and one is none…

Congrats on the buy. Glad it stayed local. You're not far. I posted a nice find for a fuel filler neck hose that I'm using on my shortbed. Napa P/N 1046. Works great. Others have tried it as well. Good luck with the project.

Thank you for the suggestions! I did order a brake master rebuild kit hoping it would work so it’s nice to hear that it should. I wouldn’t mind ordering new masters for the brake and clutch but these ones are original with the metal reservoirs and I’m afraid new ones would stand out like a bad nose job.

Thank you for the links!

I have a new set of lenses and gaskets ordered. I have one of the buckets so, worst case, I should be able to straighten it out and make a copy. I’m sure it will take 10x the amount of time I want to spend on it though, haha.

I was able to find a pair of the nice keys suggested in the key and lock link. I’ll take them to a locksmith once they arrive.

As far as brakes go, I know your suggestions are good ones but I was able to buy a nice set of the 70’s drums for all 4 corners that are basically new for a great price. I know discs work well but I have no complaints with drums that are in good condition and properly adjusted. I am also into the early fords and have a lot of miles on drum brake systems. For this pickup, I’m going to stick with the stuff I have unless I am unhappy with their performance.

Thank you for the sources. Georg has been helping me out and I can’t thank him enough!

Thank you. When I saw your post the first time it didn’t look like it would fit but I’ll pick one up when I’m in town and give it a try. I need to pull the tank and see how they have it isolated, it sits a little higher than I think it should.

Sounds good. I believe the 45 trucks have a specific filler neck and tank. Filler neck for sure. The Napa P/N 1046 filler neck hose will work perfect. Good luck.

Wow another Capri blue 45 in Lincoln. Can't wait to see it up and driving. My buddy on 193 has a capri blue 40 we like to cruise the backroads up to Hidden Falls or Auburn. You will have to join us on a ride.

I saw a link to this one posted in the FJ45 classified section after I picked it up off CL. The frame damage is a bummer but I already picked up a donor front frame section and have the ability to get it repaired right. It is very complete and original. After inspecting it, we agreed to a price and I drug it home. My plan is to get it running (already done) and driving and clean it up the best I can without getting rid of too many bumps and bruises. So far, I’m very pleased with the condition. I gave it a good wash and will start polishing once I get it on the road.

I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions as I go. I have been around FJ40’s since I rode home in my dad’s 67 when I was born but the 45 is a new world in some ways.

What was the emblem on the driver door? Mine has the sun fade of the sticker of horse and a steer on my doors. It came from a ranch in Redding.

Sounds great, I’m up near hidden falls.

It was just some dumb boating safety sticker someone slapped on there that I haven’t gotten off yet. I’m taking my time so I don’t leave an outline on the paint if possible.

Killer 45! What size tires are you running and is it stock height? I’ve been going back and forth with which size to get.

I found a ball end in the shifter linkage that is about falling apart. I guess I need to figure out where to source some replacements.

Come by and check it . I can stop by also and check yours out. I know where to source everything I don’t have.
That would be awesome.

Ive been making some slow progress. I flushed the radiator and engine then replaced all the hoses and the belt. I tried to drop the seats off to have the springs repaired and the new covers/foam installed but one shop was on vacation and the other quoted me $1000 for the job and 3 weeks wait. I’ll get the springs swapped out from a donor seat and get the covers put on when the guys return from vacation.

Work was a little slow last week with my new shop helper distracting me but I didn’t mind!

There's a shop in Folsom currently doing my LV front bench. They might be able to help.
I’d love a good lead! I picked up that fuel hose from Napa and it looks like it’s going to work great, thank you.

I have used Marshall's several times in Penryn. He does great work but has Raised his prices big time.

33x10.50 on a 2" old man emu lift. Send me a picture of the part thats bad on the shifter linkage. I might have or know of a place to source it but not positive what exact part you need. Message me on here or my number is 916-218-9775

Well I figured out my shift linkage easy enough. One of the ball studs had come loose and destroyed the threads. I was able to source new ball studs, safety clips and locknuts for it all. The one part I couldn’t find was some sort of replacement boot. I’d love original but would be happy to just keep the crud out.

I picked up a set of acorn hubcaps from upperblack. They have just the right look for this truck. I need to source one more crusty original wheel and I’ll be all set. It sounds like Georg has me taken care of. I’ll need a pair of drive flanges too because these ones were drilled out for 3/8 and 7/16 hardware. I think I’ll keep my eyes open for a coarse spline set of birfields while I’m at it.

This will make some of you happy, haha, I found a 85 pickup axle on Craigslist for $200 so headed up to Oroville today and picked it up. The outers will need rebuilt but they would have gotten the treatment anyway. Right now it is going to keep the drum brakes so I can get it on the road but the disc conversion with FJ60 brakes will be an easy project should I decide the drums aren’t cutting it.

I also set the 32” BFG muds on it while I was rotating tires on the Tacoma. I’ve been fighting the urge to pick up a Dobinson lift so I can run some 33x10.5’s. The cost of lifts these days seems out of line.

I need to give a couple of you guys a call when I’m free and pick your brain a bit. I’d like the lift but want a good ride more than I want bigger tires.

I sure appreciate everyone who has reached out and given or offered advise!

I’ve been slowly plugging away on this thing when I have time. I got the brake and clutch master cylinders rebuilt but am not happy with the kits I got from SOR so I have new masters coming from Kurt that should be here tomorrow.

I got all the hoses (except one that I forgot) replaced and the cooling system flushed but the water pump decided it didn’t want to keep the water inside. I found a rebuilder in Oregon and it’s up there getting fixed. I looked for a replacement but only found the newer style.

The starter worked for a bit then quit playing so I took the easy road and ordered a rebuilt Toyota GR starter. It looks dumb but sure turns the engine over well!

The seats were pretty hammered when I got them. I had a local shop rebuild the bases using parts from a spare 40 bench and install new covers and foam from SOR. Prices were crazy but they sure came out nice.

I caved and ordered some of the parabolic springs from Georg. I expected them to cost more than they did. I think they also look odd but I want to drive this thing a lot. They’re on the slow boat headed this way so I’m hoping to pick them up when I get back from Trail Hero.
