Just finished my saginaw conversion.



test fit before welding everything up. I also decided to add a 5/16 plate where the box penetrated the frame for a little extra strength



I used the Borgeson 36" DD telescoping steering shaft- It fit between the motor mount and frame.


Ready for some rocks now

My guess it they are to hold the rubber bellows boot to the steering slip shaft to keep debris out. These are found on many factory setups and are normally held on with metal band clamps but a zip tie can do the job just fine also I bet.

The blue high and low pressure hoses look very nice!

John Smith was correct- Just a dust boot- like they use for shocks. - BTW- I did trim the excess off so it would reduce drag and friction

The shaft is a Borgeson telescoping shaft. They have a nice web site that has some good info.

Does that thing ride hella-hard? Your front shackles are almost verticle.

Actually rides nice for 32 year old springs. Give me a little time and I will correct that shackle angle-

Looks good! What steering column are you using? I'm tring to get mine wrapped up, but the steering shaft is hitting the frame on the steering box side of the motor mount.

BTW mine is a 71' Fj40, SBC, saginaw 4.25 box, tilt column from a 1992 chevy truck.

Thanks for the nice comments- I took way longer on this than I should have out of a desire to do it clean, right, and have something safe! I kept my stock stering shaft- just cut it above the rag joint. I had the u-joint at the shaft connection welded on by a professional- again with keeping safety in mind.




The shaft was a 36" DD with a 1" bottom and 3/4" top. It cleared the motor mount and frame barely- but with some wiggle room.

I would strongly reccomend this shaft and u-joint set up for anyone doing this conversion- it's just superior to a solid shaft set up and the u-joints are trick sealed bearing units.

Now I am planning for the next mod- SOA-high steer.

What's the best way to cut the hole for the gearbox?

Unless I'm missing something - I'd tack weld the new shaft into the u-joints - don't rely 100% on the allen head retaining bolts.

For cutting the hole, most people use a hole saw, if you have access to a plama cutter, those are alot more fun.

Tim- if you can put up a list of part numbers and sources for the hoses and the linkages, I would appreciate it, and I am sure others would reference it.
