So my Dads BJ70 and his new HZJ73 have the H55F 5 speed.
What I am wondering is when did they stop making the H55F?
What are other good 5 speed transmissions made by toyota and what are ones to stay away from? When i buy a 77 in a few years am I likely to get one with an H55f? I'm assuming Crushers will sort me out pretty quick:D

The h55f was stopped being used in the 1hz 75 series utes and troopys in Aug 99 in Ausi land
oct 99 the 1hz diesel 78 troopys and 79 utes got the r151 as well as the 1hz 105 series people say the r151 are weak box's but a few mates that have them in there utes and 105 series havnt had any troubles with them behind turbo'd 1hz motors
good big gearboxs are the h150 and h151 which come out behind the turbo diesel 6 and the turbo v8 diesel and the 1fz petrols

Remember the H55F gearbox is now getting expensive to buy so start saving. THey are $4700rm here ($1,570USD) and up from $3,500rm 12 months ago. Problem is all the 1/2 cuts from Japan land now have the AUTO's in them making the clutch pushers harder to get and hence more exy. :(

i will be buying a complete truck.
I want to drive a 77. not have one for parts.

try if it suits your import laws to get a post oct 99 so you get the coil front, later dash, front end and big axel studs but mainly coil frnt lol ,they are a 76 series

it will be about 1.5 to two years before i sell my 81.
the coil front don't matter to me.
5 speed and lockers. The two number one criteria

funny.

to confirm, the H55F and the R151 is a decent tranny but the H151 has earned my distaste

5th gear could dropt the rpm in the h150 a bit more, but much nicer to use than all the h55s ive driven and had

x2.

And the H151, too. It is clicky and harder to operate than the good old H55F but delivers.

Just my two cents.

gearing sucks
shifting sucks

personal opinion. i have yet to blow up a R151/R141...

I always wonder how it would compare to my R151F, when I hear that the H150F (or H151F?) is better than the R151F, and whether to change over to the H150F when my R151F goes.

I found it interesting to know that the R151F shares it's design with a few other boxes, leading to some alternative gear ratio options if you dig a little for the info.

lets put it this way, if you are rough on equipment they you can break anything.
metal wears but i have found the H55F to be the nicest tranny for a cruiser both in gearing, shifting and reliability.
i did nto like the manuals in the 81s i brought in.
i do like the trannies in the HZJ77 and the PZJ77

cheers

wayne i know your a stickler;p
Its a given with me that the truck has to have a clean bill of health, along with a clean body and interior and also authentic kms. I trust my importer. Why don't you share with me who you import with?

Do you think the 81' had the H150 gearing in them. I had a H151 in my HDJ80 and it seem good to me. Although I will say I have the R151 in my HZJ79 and I liked that too. Toyota must feel that the H is stronger than the R because all the Turbo models on the 79 series got the H instead of the R trannys.

Cheers,

Michael

I know of a few people that have trouble with the R151 in landcruisers. In particular the early versions with the two piece output shaft I think it was. The splines strip.

In other cars they just cannot handle the load for extended periods, being a smaller lighter gearbox.

i just pulled a R141 and a 373 apart and they both have the same "stub intermediate" shaft...
