Needle on factory oil pressure guage (HZJ73 - 5 speed manual, 94K) hovers just above second mark (ref: 1st mark low, 4th mark high) when revs exceed (aprox) 1300rpm; at idle needle drops down near/slightly above low (1st) mark.

Oil level is good, truck drives great- no smoke, good power, great compression, good fuel economy (it would seem), starts instantly...

Is this normal oil pressure guage behavior for an HZJ73?

Only had the girl for a couple weeks.

Thanks for any feedback!

Peter

Just about every cruiser I have owned has had what looks to be low oil pressure - don't worry about it.

stick a aftermarket elec oil gauge in as confirmation...
once you are turbo'd you can run the gauge off the oil feed line at the turbo to confirm the pressure getting to the turbo as well...

Borrow or hire a mechanicl gauge that plugs temporarily into the oil pressure sensor hole.
This will confirm good/bad pressure although it sounds normal to me.
I think they should hold 55psi at 2500 rpm warm and about 1/10th of that at idle.Check the FSM to be sure.
The sensor is the same as 29 other toyota models so you could try a new one of those too

Peter:

Using your numbers 1 = low, 4 = high, my 1hz goes to 2.1 when started cold, 2.5 when cold and revs over 1300 1.9 to 2.1 when warm and over 1300, and about 1.3 to 1.4 when idleing warm.

In my books at least 16 PSI at idle ( 650 rpm ) for 2H engine. Also in the FSM advice from 35 to 68 PSD at 2000 rpm ..

In my case 24 PSI at 600 rpm ( idle ) it's pretty fine. operative temp for sure.
