Mick,

I bought a 105 today. Would appreciate it if you can put up pics of the upgrades you have made to your 105.

I would like to do the following:

Tweek up the interior
Put in an intercooler perhaps if its not too much work and has no adverse effect.
Also perhaps change to auto transmission, again that is if it does not cost a ton and has no adverse effect.

Put in power windows, mirrors.. what else?

Regards
Sajid

G'day Sajid

The only mods done to the 105 as yet are the snorkel that was already fitted when I bought it, the bullbar which I will be changing yet, and the dual battery system which hopefully I should finish wiring up tomorrow.

Go for the intercooler if you can. Turbo diesels run "on boost" more often then petrol motors so deserve an intercooler more then petrol motors. They will allow you to squeeze a bit more power out of them without getting them too hot.

Auto transmissions work well with torque curve of the diesels.

The interior upgrades should be easy if you can get hold of a GXL or VX interior to raid the bits from.

Good luck with your build and make sure you post some pics:grinpimp:

Just a couple of pics of the battery terminals I am using with the dual battery install.

Looking good Mick.

One question though, what happened to your primary fuel filter/element ? I only see the one in that pic above ?

That's all we get here on the 105. The 75/78/79's get two filters but the 100's don't.

I had a CAV Lucas 296 filter on the 80 but I don't think it flowed enough. At high load/high speed it hesitates a bit sometimes. I might go twin 296 filters on this one.

Intersting indeed! Maybe it is Toy compensating for the quality of diesel to be expected when we venture outside of ZA. We don't get the new 76 or 79 with the new D4D V8 at all. :crybaby:

I can't remember if the D4D V8 in the new 79 has twin filters but I know the 1HDT powered ones did. Next time a new one comes into work I'll have to check.

My 80 has the 296 filter which is a fraction of the price of an OEM filter but I have doubts that it flows enough. I reckon that if on the 105 I double it up and run two 296 filters in parallel I'll still get the cheap filters (even two 296s are cheaper than one OEM) but I'll get plenty of flow.

I got the wiring for the dual batteries connections done this arvo. I still have to run the wiring for the fridge down to the back but at least the aux battery is getting charged again. I have to tidy up a few little bits before I take some photos for you all but I should be able to do that during the week.

The 296ers are rated at about 45 litres an hour. The feed pump in a 1HZ can supposely pull 54 litres an hour.

Your engine only needs 25 litres an hour under extremely hard going.

This thread needs more pix. :flipoff2:

 Please explain. If the 1HZ can pull 54Lph but the 296 only pulls 45Lph there would be a flow restriction. Also if the 1HZ can pull 54Lph why is mine with a turbo and the fuel turned up only pulling 25Lph?

I'm interested to understand this as the hesitation I had was a pain and I want to try and eliminate it.I reckon if the filter is doubled the flow restriction will be halved as well as giving twice the surface area of filter. My 80 only ever hesitated when lugging hard in third gear out of corners (especially uphill or towing a boat) when the revs started to get up towards 3500-4000rom. With less load or in other gears it never really did it.

Thats the overflow volume X 60 mins @ 2000 rpm according to page FU77 in the FSM. The 1HD T is a max of 1083 mls a minute x 60 is 65 litres an hour
The 1HZ is actually closer to 48 lph.

The minimums are much lower

I guess the 296 is barely suitable for the 1HZ but the turbo needs a bigger type or another. Ive had the 1HZ with the 296 for nearly 3 years and its fine on power and runs smooth at all rpm.
Ive also got the smaller 6 mm petrol fuel lines:D
I think the 1HZ is normally 8mm and the 1HD T is 10mm

Your problems may have been due to pump pressure

When I do get around to bolting the turbo on the 105 I will probably take it to the local diesel dyno to get the pump set up properly.

IIRC my 80 has 10mm lines??

I got a phone call from my mate in Cloncurry last night. He wanted us to join him on a trip through central Australia in August/September. So it looks like I now have a time limit to finish this project.

The plan is to drive 16hrs up to Cloncurry to meet them, down to Boulia and then across the Plenty Hwy to Alice Springs. Then out to the MacDonnell Ranges, Hermannsburg, Kings Canyon, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (Olgas). Then across to Chamber's Pillar, back to Alice Springs, up to Tennant Creek, back across to Mount Isa and Cloncurry.

My mate can only get 2 weeks off work for this trip but hopefully I'll be able to take at least 3 weeks off. In this extra week hopefully I'll be able to head up to the Gulf and spend a couple of days fishing up around Karumba before heading home.

Have you checked the gauze filter where the fuel enters the pump?
I seen someone on Overlander who found his fuel tank solenoids clogged with orange plastic

Haven't checked them but will do. I have to take everything off each cruiser to swap it all over so I will check each as I do it.

The 105 is getting a new clutch today. It has been slipping ever since I bought it. I knew that it was stuffed when I bought it and I was going to do it myself but the hoist at work is tied up at the moment for a while and the clutch is getting to bad to continue much longer. I am going over to Fraser Island for the ANZAC Day long weekend and the last thing I need is a dead clutch on the Island. I am getting the local clutch specialists to replace it with a Safari Tuff clutch. I put one of these in the 80 before I put the turbo on it and it has survived about 180,000km of abuse with no signs of failing so that is good enough for me.

I have a Safari Tuff clutch in the 75 and its great .A little heavy but very smooth and predictable.
Well worth the extra $$$$$

I put one in the 80 and it has been great. The one in the 105 has been squishy and yuck (technical terms) since I bought it. The plan has always been to replace it when I had a chance to but the other day I was towing a car trailer with my little Daihatsu Scat on it and it was slipping bad on gear changes. I am going over to Fraser Island in a couple of weeks time and I didn't have anywhere to do it between now and then.

The difference in feel between the worn out old clutch and the new Safari Tuff clutch is awesome. Yeah, it is a bit heavier than the OEM clutch but the feel of the clutch is heaps better. The whole car feels a lot more "balanced" when changing gears too.
