Great choice in vehicle:D

From that inside pic, I can see the centre diff lock switch but not for front and rear

I thought them optional on the 105 models

:eek:Ross, they are std on all the ZA 105's. Strange indeed. I always thought you guys got the best options...;)

Well,if you want them you just pay the extra $2800.
If they are standard you pay for them whether you want them or not.
The govt and the miners are the biggest buyers and they want the lowest price possible.
Most of the 105 spend their life on bad roads rather than serious offroad use
In oz very few cruisers have factory lockers unless it is a Sahara

I have the airlocker for the front from my 80 that I will be fitting to the 105. Eventually I will be fitting a rear airlocker as well, as funds permit. I prefer the airlockers over the factory lockers. We build bodies for the electricity board at work and the HDJ79s have twin factory lockers. Having used these and the airlockers I find the OEM ones slow to activate and have too many exposed components to damage.

I am looking at going for airbag rear suspension rather than coils. I already have a compressor and tank system so I just need the airbags and gauges.

Welcome to Airbag Man

If I build the carputer I may be able to utilize it to monitor the air pressures in each side and maybe even to control the ride height. There are digital pressure sensors available so it shouldn't be too hard.

I know I am starting to get a bit hi-tech with this build and one of the main mantras with this type of build is OEM, stock is best. The way I look at it though is the vehicle itself is a 1HZ powered truck. The vehicle can basically run without any electricals at all. Worst comes to worst I can isolate all the fancy stuff and still have the basic vehicle, ie; so it won't leave me stranded. Even if I use the carputer to operate the airbags I will still have manual shutoffs to isolate the airbags with separate schrader valves for each bag to manually fill the bags. If I do damage a bag it will be hard to find a replacement in remote areas but it would be the same if I broke a coil. I can always remove the bags and go back to coils if it fails and I can't get replacements easily.

Did you have a coil fail on you or any other bad experience with them or what ?

I am a 4wd mechanic by trade, not that I have been spinning the spanners much lately. I have seen more than my fair share of broken coils over the years but this isn't the reason I want to use airbags.

I like the fact that you can retain ride height no matter what load you have. On my 80 I had a lot of weight in it most of the time and even with 4" coils and 30mm spacers in the rear it still sagged in the rear. When we went on trips it sagged even more. With the airbags I can set the ride height (2" above std) and it will compensate for any load onboard and retain the same height. Even towing large trailers, which I do a lot of at work, won't cause it to sag. Another thing I like about the airbags is the ability to raise or lower the vehicle as needed. The raising is obvious off road but lowering is good for ease of loading and fitting in underground carparks. They can also be adjusted side to side which will be great to help level the vehicle if I fit a roof top tent.

By retaining the correct ride height at all times perfect steering and suspension geometry can be maintained, improving safety. Headlight aiming is always correct too.

I never considered the advantage of being able to lower the height. I have +400kg constant Coils in the rear which is fine if you are loaded which I mostly am but not when you are empty. Also sometimes it happens that for a particular obstacle you want a bit more lift in the front but not the rear eg a steep dune with little or no runup with a "lip"/ ditch at the foot of the dune where you just know you have to gun it but chances are good you will bang the bump stops hard. Good thinking man. Hope it works out and lasts :)

:cheers:To have the correct weight coils for travelling I'd have to put up with a harsh ride normally.

By having the correct ride height all the time you know you have full up travel available for any unexpected hits while at speed. If loaded with coils you'd hit the bumpstops earlier.

Longevity of the airbags is a concern but doing a bit of research it seems people quite often get up to 15 years out of a set of airbags. I'd like to see how much a set of coils would sag over that amount of time getting pounded off road all the time. Apparently they resist punctures pretty well too.

One of the guys at work has a petrol 100 with alloy rims so he sold me his old steel GXL rims so now I have a spare set (to paint black;)).

Would look nice with black side steps too.
You can powder coat them. (the steps)
Looking forward to this build up.
Heres a pic to hurry you up.

Matt
DTS on 105.webp

Looks like youve got 2 left hand tie downs, there.
and ....with care and patience, or practice, the facia around the juke box can be fitted better at the top.

Am i looking too close?

Matt

Congratulations, by the way!!!! on the newest additions to the family

I hadn't thought about powder coating the side steps black.:idea: I had planned on keeping the alloy step treads of the side steps and making a set of sliders to neatly fit in under the treads and tie back into the chassis. I like the idea of powder coating the originals.

BTW stop teasing. (at least until I can join in;))

LOL
What is it with you and bad weather....Outback 07?

:D

Tell me about it:rolleyes:

Every time I get to have holidays we have the biggest rains. I must be the "Drought Breaker" or something.

Now the rains have stopped for the time being the bloody mosquitos are eating me alive whenever I go downstairs to work on it. I look like a connect-the-dots game.

2 left hand tie downs:confused::meh:

I just had the facia off to check the amount of space behind for the carputer and hadn't put it back right. I noticed it a bit later and fixed it up.

No you are not looking too close. That's why I pay you the big money, to pick up all the little things I miss:D

Thanks for the congrats too:grinpimp:

Mick,

I bought a 105 today. Would appreciate it if you can put up pics of the upgrades you have made to your 105.

I would like to do the following:

Tweek up the interior
Put in an intercooler perhaps if its not too much work and has no adverse effect.
Also perhaps change to auto transmission, again that is if it does not cost a ton and has no adverse effect.

Put in power windows, mirrors.. what else?

Regards
Sajid

How is the build coming along ? :bounce:

Very slowly:crybaby:

I have been renovating our house so I can put it on the market. It is on the market now so I'll have time to work on it now.

The :princess: want's to keep it relatively stock for a while. At least until the baby:princess: is big enough to have the baby seat turned around. Until then I'll have to make do doing all the other mods. Then I can lift it, etc.

I have been stripping all the good stuff off the 80 in preparation for the build. The turbo will need a bit of a freshen up before it goes on. I want to get a new bullbar too before I fit the winch.
