I've had tick bites linger for over a month. Nasty little bastards.
But seriously, Lyme is no joke, I know people who are seriously fu***d up forever from it.

Just a "heads up" that we will be packing this weekend and leaving early on the 4th. Please let me know if we need to bring any group gear?

Thanks!

Jamie

HOLY CRAP!!! Is it that close?

It IS that close! I still have the front end torn out from under the Truck!

sorry guys I know how much you will all miss me, but Jenny is starting a new addiction of riding the Goldwing to a new vineyard on the weekends...so I plan on hitting the vineyard and then taking her to see about a newer bike...lol

There's a recent interesting thread on ExPo on some trails and things to do in this area. I'd really like to visit the fire tower: Expedition Portal

Shaun, sorry to hear that you will not be making it. Happy to hear that you may get a new scoot.

Joe. I have no idea where that is but am certainly up for looking for it if others are as well. I've heard mixed stories about Hot Springs. I am sure @Izzyandsue will look at the maps and chime in soon.

Less than two weeks out folks, guess I'll have to take a look at Heather's truck and prep for the trip.

@RedHeadedStepChild , you need to re assemble your rig dude :)

To all going: please spend the $11 on a Trails Illustrated map for the area. I know its cool to invest in tires, bigger tires, biggest tires, fridges, YETI coolers, bigger kitchens, bigger radios, etc. But a map is essential It is a big group and we could get separated as some may want to make multiple stops and others may want to drive on.
Maps 229 and 782 are good start, Amazon available.

Thanks for the note Izzy and links, Johnny!

We will likely NOT have our fridge or dual battery set up for this trip - - just in case anyone here was planning on putting their beer in it, or running their fans off our truck, etc . . . :)

I am going nuts over this, just found this free app for iPad, and bought a couple of maps to try it out. It is pretty neat! I got 782 and 783 NatGeo maps in there now, plus the hard copy maps, plus the Gaia GPS as primary nav, and the Scenic Map USA Eastern as 4th set of maps. So yeah, I do spend way too much on this stuff, but won't spend a dime on cup holder.... we enginerds is strange batch of peeple....

And we will get lost or at least try!

Joe,
I think I found the area the Expo thread describes, and it looks cool. Some gates we need to navigate around, but could be cool forest trails up there, Hot Springs is just South of the left side. This new Avenza app will eliminate all work productivity today.....

" . .I believe Tubs 5 and 6 are two of the Deluxe Tubs. IIRC Tub 5 is all the way at the "point" where Spring Creek joins the French Broad River. As such, it is the most private of the thoroughly private tub array. The views of the river, the creek, the bluffs, and the forested mountains is great. Or so I'm told..............."

I called the Nolichucky district office, a lot of campsites are still closed. I called because I looked on line and they say will open in the spring, but most are still close. They plan to open some next week. Just letting you all know, we may have to postpone, the ranger told me they were close due fire.

@Izzyandsue very nice looking app you have there! I recently scored a virtually new Garmin nuvi 1490 for $20 and was able to hack it and download topos, so between your app, paper maps, Gazetteer, the nuvi, OSM topos, prior experience and notes, we should get good and lost.

If anyone else is up for the fire tower, great; if not, no worries.

@Rice showed me this App at The Relic Run! Holy smokes, this is the best freaking app ever made! We knew exactly where we were the whole time and we ventured on a few sections of trail that we'd not yet seen before. WITHOUT getting lost. I'm hoping to find a pdf of Windrock Park before GSMTR... There are a few available for download, but I haven't seen one that shows the trails yet.

Anyhow, best App ever, highly recommended.

I'm a big fan of the "MyTrails" app in the play store. It can pull from Google, national topo map stores including others, allows you to import map files and also allows you to define swaths of land to make maps available offline. Appears very accurate.

Here are some screenshots of areas I've used it. Linville falls and hurricane creek:
