If I understand correctly to seal up the bearing area while allowing the CV not to turn. Having machined flanges along with the dust cap will prevent contaminants from entering the bearing area and prevent grease from escaping.

I looked at doing the same thing but decided against it. My thoughts - The spline supports the outer end of the stub axle shaft and in order to remove enough material to keep the axle from coming in contact with the drive plate the edge for the cap was gone. Also the snap ring on the axle end keeps the rear seal tight against the wheel without the clip dirt will enter. I saw it as a no win.
Your thoughts?

Sorry, new to 100s and looking at one with a blown front diff that would need to drive 3 hours home.

Don't you need to worry about locking the tcase when driving without front wheel drive?

Also, what about ABS sensors?

No problem driving with the tcase locked but you will need to remove the front drive line and the drive plate. ABS will still work once the stuff is removed and locked.

I know this hasn't been posted in for a while, but since it is in the FAQ I thought a follow up would be helpful for some. My diff went out and I needed to get on a trip in a few days, fortunately I was able to get it replaced, but apparently this can get you much farther than I was thinking it would. (My concern was the friction on the snap ring)

I reached out to @Muddy Bean and he said he drove quite a while with it that way. In total ~30k miles... this is a complete :ninja: move if you need to get it up and going in a hurry even for a longer trip, or save up the $$ to replace the front diff. Obviously replacing the front diff is still the best option, but again, I thought a follow up to add more info for someone who had the same concerns I did would be helpful.

So….. my front diff is blown and I have removed driveshaft and drive flanges to ride around in 2wd until I get a new diff sent to me. One part I’m not clear on, should I put the C-rings back on to axles without the flange for the time being? Or is it ok to leave it off?

Thanks

A c-clip without the flange will do you no good. It will not keep the axle from receding inside the hub. But if you plan on driving around like that I’d recommend a cover of sorts to keep dirt and debris out of your bearings and hub. @BenCC makes a dummy flange which is a great solution

So what happens if you only pull the front driveshaft, and not the hub flanges too? I may have just done this, and then drove 100 miles home…..
Didn’t have any cell service on the trail, so there wasn’t a way to look up what to do.
