I was warned that there is not enough air circulation to put a HAM in a tight area like that. Could have been a bunch of poo, but that is why I did the detached face unit.

You know, good point, I was going to mention this could be an issue with a transceiver in there. You could drill a bunch of holes in the forward sloped face of the Tuffy that's over this area. This would also allow any sound from an internal speaker out (I use a remote speaker with my Bearcat.) But be aware, the Tuffy steel is tough, so you'll probably want to do this outside the truck before installing if you go this route.

The remote head is a slick solution here, as it can go in the appropriate spot. If you look at the link to my install, you'll see that I raised mine enough to stick an inverter under mine. There's certainly room for a radio black box to fit under there.

@2fpower @greentruck I had also considered the air flow problem when I installed mine. However, I don't think its a big issue for a standard 2m unit like the one pictured. If you had something setup that was acting as a repeater for the group I could see it though. Otherwise, most of your heat will be generated during transmission and very little during receive. Unless your giving an epic commencement speech it should be fine.

For mine the lid is always left open when I'm running it. This allows what little heat is building to travel up and out via convection. I have conducted some very scientific experiments with temperature probing (my finger) into the console and its doesn't get much warmer than ambient in there. I also run it on low power 25w since most of the guys in the group are running 5w Baofeng units. Occasionally if the group is scattered I might crank to 65w and blind transmit to them.

Sandblasted and painted with wrinkle paint. Plan to spray with a coat of brown to match interior. Arm rest made from 3rd row seat.

I made the cup holder sit flush and recessed into shift console. (Console is not in place pic)

Now you're going to get heat coming in after cutting into the shifter console. I did the same and am working in a fix. I think it's going to involve dark carpet tile. Plus the drink holder rubber or foam or whatever it is sucks. I think I'm going to trace it on carpet tile. It's gets loud all the rattling.

Actually, you don't cut into the shift console. It's simply got a hole there that needs filled once the OEM console is removed. I used an old piece of mudflap, cut and riveted in place. No detectable heat increase in my experience.

Nice writeup! Suggested upgrade: see if you can replace the PIA lock with a Medeco or similar. I have it on excellent authority that the lock it comes with can be picked in six seconds.

Is that the 8" one? Is it close enough to the driver to make a decent armrest? I was thinking about relocating my ebrake and doing the 10" console to get it closer and hopefully make a decent arm rest, but your setup looks pretty decent.
Delete the cupholder and mount the Tuffy farther forward. Add BH3D cupholder to shifter console.

I planned on doing that, but I want it closer to the driver side. I'll also be using the one with the full lid instead of the radio one. The padding goes further forward on that one.
