I emailed Garry and he said that he would check shipping and get me a total. He said that he would email me the price the next day and that was a week ago. I sent him another email politely asking for an update and haven't heard a peep. Weird.

Garry must be elbows deep in car guts. I haven't heard anything back from him (2 months later). I would pull the trigger if I could get a hold of him. Wonder what gives?

Dave any update on the gear install?

UKAviator, did you end up pulling the trigger on the gearsets? Have you installed them?? Impressions?

Anyone else purchased gear sets or diffs from the wrecker?

Thanks.

I didn't do it in the end. Went with some 315/75/16 tires instead which brought the RPM's down some. I may go this route late down the road

What size tires were you running and what was your RPM at 65MPH (about as fast as I drive/push my TD80)? What did the 315's do in reduction to RPM's at the same speed?

I run 315's but still keep looking for a 6th gear on the highway. :p

Anyone seen this? Higher gears for the transfer case... Ratio is 0.912. The diff gears would be 3.727/4.10 = 0.909, so the transfer case option is not quite as high.

Unfortunately price looks about on-par with diff gears..... $2000-2500 depending which website you look at.

Not a whole lot.
Bear in mind my speedo (according to my GPS) shows 10mph slower than what I'm actually doing.
So 50 is actually 60, 65 actually 75 etxView attachment 828828

Where are these transfer case gears from?

Not sure why those pics didn't attach .... anyway ... 70mph=2600rpm, 75mph=2650rpm

I still haven't installed the new 3.73s up front, but I did put in a new locking torque converter. I can hit 75 a hair under 2000 RPM with the TC locked in 4th gear. I'm running 315/75r16 BFG AT's.

Guess it helps to add the link eh? :)

http://www.terraintamer.com/en/4wd-products/transmission-a-driveline/item/119-4wd-transmission-components

So I emailed Terrain Tamer for a quote, and got a reply from 4WheelAuto in Edmonton. Guess they are the distributor for western Canada. He quoted me $1,695 + tax. Waiting to hear back on availability and shipping quote.

Akella is back-ordered on 3.73 gears, otherwise I would have already purchased them....... so I kept Googling for things like custom 5th gears etc, and that is how I stumbled on Terrain Tamer.

I am wondering if it would be easier to install transfer case gears compared to doing 2 diffs. (I have no experience doing either.) Price with bearings and seals and stuff works out to be almost identical. And I KNOW my t-case bearings are a bit noisy... but I can't hear my diffs yet :hillbilly: Plus, if I do my diffs, I should really budget in an extra $2000+ and add ARB diff locks.........

Here's the Terrain Tamer gears installed on the shafts. Just waiting on a new c-clip from Mr. T and then it can all go back together for a road test :)

Nice stuff Nat.

Good to see those gears helical cut. Shouldn't howl like my Mark's gears. Im guessing you didn't make the club meeting tonight (at least not in the 80).

Do you have your t-case reassembled? Does it yield a reduction in final drive to your likeness? Mileage improvement?

Thanks and looking forward to your first impressions!

They are very whiney but the ratio seems good. I am awaiting a tube of special lube from Terrain Tamer which is supposed to help with the noise. If it doesn't work, the gears will be coming out. The whine would be tolerable for a trail rig but this truck is my highway ::princess:: so I'm picky :)

Any update with the t-case gears or differential gears?

Thanks.

Update bump?

Garry did finally get back to me regarding the 3:70 locked differentials for sale. He has a pair ready to ship. 900GBP for the pair and another 280GBP to ship to me in Colorado. It basically equates to close to $2500 said n done. WOW.

I wonder what would be the better option for me, buy new r & p from Akella and set up like brand new or order these from Garry and put them straight in. Which is less of a gamble do you reckon?

I got few emails and pms regarding 3.73 gears this week and here is my thoughts on the whole 3.73 gears change.

3.73 gears were offered only in some European countries like UK and France and Germany and few other. So to find them used wont be easy and shipping wont be cheap. Plus prices in EU are usually higher than in North America as we can see from the post above.

USED DIFFS:
Buying used diffs can be risky. As 80 series is getting very old and maintenance on a lot of them can neglected for awhile and diff fluids are usually one of the most neglected fluids on a car. So you may run into situation when you will have to drop additional $ to change the bearings on just purchased diffs. However i wont call it the biggest issue as if you will do it yourself it will set you up $150-200 per diff for parts. If i bought used diffs i would rebuild them regardless, but that is just me:doh:

My biggest issue is the locker actuators. Most of them either failed or may fail soon due to age, luck of use and corrosion. Remember Northern Europe has lots of rust on cars. Not like Michigan or Ohio rust, but very close. So don't expect used diffs to look like they were taken from Arizona wrecked cruiser. Here is a price example for the locker actuators:

FRONT ACTUATOR, DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SHIFT 41450-60060 1 $ 329.47
REAR ACTUATOR, DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SHIFT 41450-60042 1 $ 499.36
It is way below dealer listed price. List price front $645 and rear $953. I think they are made out of gold:(

NEW DIFFS:
Here are the current prices on the diffs with 3.73 ratio:
CARRIER ASSY, DIFFERENTIAL, FRONT, *FGR=41:11=3.727,W(DIFFERENTIAL LOCK) $ 1,499.99
CARRIER ASSY, DIFFERENTIAL, FRONT, *FGR=41:11=3.727 $ 1,499.99
CARRIER ASSY, DIFFERENTIAL, REAR, *FGR=41:11=3.727,W(DIFFERENTIAL LOCK) DISCONTINUED
CARRIER ASSY, DIFFERENTIAL, REAR, *FGR=41:11=3.727 $ 1,499.99

The easiest and most reliable way to get the 3.73 gears into 80 axles is to install new diff assemblies. Price is high, but you can resell your old diffs and get some money back especially if you have lockers in them.

I wish everything was simple, but Toyota decided about 3-4 years ago to discontinue 3.73 read diff with the locker and keep open diff in production:crybaby:. It does not make sense to me, but we just have to leave with it:eek: So if you want to have rear locked diff with 3.73 gears you better to re gear your current one.

REGEAR:
Regear is good option if you can do it yourself. However, if you are paying shop to do it can be quite expensive. I heard prices $500-1000 per diff at least in Canada:( So at this price might as well to get new assembly for the front and for the rear if you are ok with open diff at a back.

FINAL GEAR KIT, DIFFERENTIAL, FRONT, *FGR=41:11=3.727,W(DIFFERENTIAL LOCK) $ 649.99
FINAL GEAR KIT, DIFFERENTIAL, FRONT, *FGR=41:11=3.727 $ 649.99
INAL GEAR KIT, DIFFERENTIAL, REAR, *FGR=41:11=3.727 $ 719.99

NOTE: If you are buying FINAL GEAR KIT you would need new flange and few other parts as new sets come with different number of splines and pinion size.
FRONT:
FLANGE SUB-ASSY, FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION, FRONT, 29 SPLINES 41204-35082 1 $ 59.17
SLINGER, FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL 41214-60011 1 $ 3.40

REAR:
FLANGE SUB-ASSY, REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION, REAR 41204-60060 1 $ 67.07
SLINGER, REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL 41214-60020 1 $ 3.61
BEARING, TAPERED ROLLER (FOR REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT) 90366-33006 1 $ 33.04
BEARING, TAPERED ROLLER (FOR REAR DRIVE PINION REAR) 90366-40111 1 $ 55.49

60 SERIES GEAR:
You can use rear gears from 60 series, however you can not use front gears from 60 series as front on 80 is high pinion and 60 series is low pinion. You can run 60 series rear gears at a back and use 80 series gears at a front, but in this case i wont suggest to run you 80 in AWD mode on highway as gear ratio front and back will be different 3.70 vs 3.73 Off-road should be ok, but for the highway you would need front hubs or part time conversion of your transfer case.

I hope it will answer some of your questions and will help to make proper decision.

It has been quite a long time since I visited this thread. Has anyone swapped over to 3:70 gears front and rear that might report to us their impressions and or if they would do it again given the opportunity?

I would like to swap to 3:70's but want to make sure it will make sense to do so, re: not major (but fairly significant) decrease in RPM's on highway, driveability, issues etc. It isn't an inexpensive undertaking for limited results.

I would like to hear from anyone who has done the swap and their impressions.

Thanks very much!
