Howdy...
I haven't been on here much and haven't had time to follow these threads.

If you want to get ahold of me, please call me at my shop - number is on my website. Make sure you ask for me.

I have get gear sets easily enough, and I have an order pending from the supplier right now (being picked and packed).

I just priced these out for a client: $1649 CAD (~$1170 USD at today's rates) for the front and rear R&P sets.

These come as gears only, so if you're wanting crush sleeves, seals, bearings, or installation kits, then that's extra (seals are cheap, as are crush sleeves).

The are 4 sets available. I am placing an order now, and I'm trying to complete it in the next day or so.

You could use overseas R&P sets with regular set-up kits from US dealers like Nitro or such right?

Another idea I had (this would be for a truck without factory lockers), and will probably end up doing, is installing an FJ60 third member for the rear (very cheap and plentiful, most guys want 4.11's and would probably directly trade), and a V6 4Runner or whatever the 8" third is that comes with a factory 3.70:1. Of course you would have to change to crossover steering but I want to do that anyways.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I can supply 3.73 gears for the 80 series as well. Prices are reasonable, but availability may be low - need to enquire.

Shipping will be the big question as the weight is fairly high on these.

John,

What are your prices for 3.73 gear sets for my 1993 80 series?
I'm in NS for the shipping quote.
Thanks.

I posted the pricing above your query by a few posts... $1649 CAD per set (front and rear R&P not including set up kits).

Shipping to NS isn't going to be that much via Canada Post or others.

Are you willing, and if so how much, for just the front R&P?

Please contact me directly at work for quotes, rather than via these fora.

The front gear sets are $1026.98 each CAD.

These are Genuine Toyota gear sets.

A large portion of the cost is shipping. If there was a bulk order of heavy parts, I would ship these via pallet or partial container and there would be a fair bit of savings, but most of my parts orders trickle in making larger orders that take 8-10 weeks not very practical.

Things that do well by bulk orders are part time conversion kits, transmissions, gear sets, snorkels and the like - things that are bulky or heavy.

Thanks John. I haven't been on the forums much for a year or so but I now just saw that there are new 3.54 gears available from Marks........ Just when I thought I might pull the trigger on 3.73...... I gotta make a spreadsheet and compare 3.73 to 3.54 :)

Anyone bought the 3:70 gear sets and installed them yet? Impressions? drawbacks?

I'm interested to hear what the consensus is. Anyone?

I slapped a 70 series 3.70 diff in the rear of my 80 just to try it out and I LOVE it. No noticeable difference in fuel economy, but it's way more drivable. Arm not so overworked shifting so fast. Also, I get to stay in 4th a lot more which is especially useful when towing m101 trailer.

Is there a part number for 3:70 Factory gearing for w/anti-lock brakes and rear differential lock or is there no difference between the LSD rear, open diff rear or Factory diff lock rear in regard to R&P? I'm looking at getting the rear gear set with diff lock but partsouq doesn't seem to list it as available? Anyone else tried finding them there? Did I not look hard enough?

I put a used set of 3.70 from a 60 series in my truck back in the early summer. I concur with what 70sguy said. I was going to buy the Marks 3.73 for the front, but then I heard good reports about the latest TT transfer case gears, so I was thinking maybe just get those instead, and put the 4.10 back in the rear. Pretty much same overall result.

On the other hand, I was thinking if I'm putting the TT in the transfer case, may as well leave the 3.70 in the rear for the time being, and see what it's like with both. Revs would be roughly 90% * 90% = 81% compared to stock gearing. Might feel a bit sluggish, but on the other hand, if I get a gturbo + intercooler in the future................

I definitely appreciate not having to shift quite as quickly....... stock gears with a 5 speed, you pretty much never drive lower than 4th, even in town, so shifting is a bit of a work out :S

I ordered a Factory front diff (drop-in complete) and a set of rear gears from Mark's 4wd in Victoria Australia. I will try to document the before's and after's to the best of my ability to share my experience(s).

Stay tuned...

The pinion gear for the 3:73's is different and requires a new companion flange, part number 42104-60060. (as Akella pointed out)

The 4:10 is a 29 spline (IIRC) and the 3:73 is a 32 spline. Available locally at your Toyota dealer.

I should be installing these next weekend and will have more to share soon after. And yes, I will have more photos too.

I'm installing the 3:73 gears this weekend. I'll post results next week sometime.
