How or where to read codes for a 1994 80 Series?? (2 Viewers)

I acknowledge the chart above. I think my situation might be a little unusual. The speedo stopped working at the same time as the O/D light started blinking. The check engine light did not come on. But when I did the diagnostic it gave me 5-5. That blink code seems to be the only means for the car to give information. I'm positing that this is a transmission error code because there is no CEL. And as I look around for videos I see a couple of isolated examples of people jumpering E1 to TT position to diagnose transmission problems. (Video link below.) I need to try this and see what happens.

I also had a look at the 1994 FSM and did find some information.

My 80 has the speed sensor mounted on the transmission--what the FSM calls "Speed Sensor No. 2" and the error code for that is Trouble Code 61.

My conclusion is that I am I have no idea what is going on. I have a replacement speed sensor coming in a couple of days and I will put it on and see if anything changes.

I find it interesting that Toyota chose to separate out the diagnostic code decode charts to different sections of the FSM. I did not even know, until this incident, that it had transmission error codes!

There is an entire section regarding A442F troubleshooting and diagnosis starting on page AT-17 of the FSM. Just sayin'...

Thank you JH. Just worked through that educating myself. I edited my post above a bit.

did you ever figure out this issue? I had a similar problem. my speed sensor on the transfer case caused a short in my gauge cluster so I drove around without it connected for about a week for the new part to show up. I still had O/D & lock up during that time but now I dont have O/D.

I did. It turned out to be very simple. I had a defective sender on the transmission. Not expensive to fix and not expensive to try. I don't have the part number on me at the moment. But if you have any trouble identifying it, you can PM me. Basically what it does is take the mechanical output of the transfer case and turn it into an electrical signal. I first tried cleaning the old one including ultrasonically and then flushing it, but it turned out actually to be a defective sender. Good luck! Personally, I think it'd be worth trying with your situation.

I am getting Code 26 Air-Fuel ratio rich. It came on after doing some driving in heavy snow/wind. I have a snorkel and noticed the intake of the snorkel had snow caked inside and around the intake. Could this be leading to my issue? Figured as it’s melting, sending water into my air filter and other places I don’t want it. Thanks guys.

Remove the snow, clear the code and see if it comes back.

Duh

Remove the snow, clear the code and see if it comes back.
After typing I r
Remove the snow, clear the code and see if it comes back.
I assumed that’s what was causing it. I got the code to clear. I just wasn’t sure if others who have experience deep snow had separate issues causing the code to pop. I appreciate the reply nonetheless!

As I recall, some snorkel manufacturers (with heads that move) recommend turning the head facing backwards in heavy rain and snow. My snorkeled 80 sit parked all winter, so I haven't experienced what you describe.

No basis in fact, but I speculate that the snow/ice is restricting air into the intake resulting in lower volume of air than the engine needs, resulting in a rich mixture.

ChatGPT suggested 55 was a fault with Speedometer Sensor #1 which is consistent with what I'm seeing with my 1993 when I used the paperclip. The speedometer just stopped working and the O/D light started doing a slow single blink as well. When I asked ChatGPT what its' source was it said 'general Toyota error code of this era.' So remains to be confirmed.

FYI, I'm an EE who's done AI development, and ChatGPT will often lie to you. It's like a toddler with some solid information mixed with a great imagination. It's a useful tool, but I've had it give me a lot of misinformation, often influenced by the way I ask the question.

I'd love to comment on this, but I'd also like to continue to post here...
