i am using my 60 as a DD to and from work and around town on the weekends....question is should i use much for off road and take the chance of abuse/damage etc?

i got to have it as a DD first and foremost for at least the next 2 years or so. then i can relegate to extra vehicle/toy status....

thoughts on this? also, how's working out for ya'll that use yours as a DD?

so far, only a week into using mine as one, but it runs like a champ. used the 4WD the other day in the rain and did a little muddin' worked great! :D

I would say no. But then that is me. I have built up and wheeled four 4x4's. If you are going the wheel this rig it WILL get hammered. Certainly not in ALL cases but in most. Hard core 4x4's take a beating. Both in the running gear dept. and the body. It all depends on what your feelings are about this rig. I have built up Jeep Cherokees, Suzuki Samurai's and Cruisers. My current HZJ60 is my adventure vehicle. It's got lockers and a 10,000 pound winch just in case, but I dont plan on needing it. It's my drive to Alaska/Mexico rig. I plan on buying a BJ74 for my hard core 4x4.

Hope that helps.

I beat the piss out of my DD but I have the luxury of having many cruisers. Usually only one at a time is running while the others are undergoing some mods. You need to push it to the edge a few times just to build confidence in its abilities

Easy trail rides, camping, fishing, etc. My 62 was my DD for years, but I used it occasionally off road. These are tough trucks and can do some pretty amazing stuff without breakage.

I would stay away from rock crawling, but other than that- it's fair game!

my rig is a dd and i offroad as much as i can..if ya dont beat the living hell out of off the road you should be fine..

I use my FJ62 for my dd and I have only gone on the trails when GSMTR has rolled around the past two years. Mine is in really good shape all around so I baby it. However I have a lift and 33"s on it and plan on more mods like sliders, rear locker etc to make it more capable. It will never be a weekend beater offroad truck but I do want and like to use it for what its built to do. We do alot of long trip travels with our dogs so I want to keep it in good shape but plan on taking it to the big TLCA events in the future like moab etc,etc to have some fun on the trail but plan on sticking to the light to moderate stuff. My wife makes fun of me on the trails because Im so cautious and I drive so slow through obstacles but hey my truck comes out without any damage, a few scratches and dings but thats it. :flipoff2:

It depends on what you mean by "offroad." :D

I took my stock FJ60 DD offroad this weekend, some mud, some rocks, some hills--lost a bumper cap, crushed a side marker light, got it really muddy, ground the rear spring hangers on some rock ledges. Took it home, hosed it down, put the bumper cap back on, and other than the rear marker light, you couldn't tell. Of course, I was wheeling with a group of really experienced guys--the two times I couldn't make it over a ledge of rocks, they strapped me over so I wouldn't pound my truck any more.

In the long run, if you wheel your truck, eventually you are going to incur some damage--but that can be limited if you take it easy and wheel smart. It's doubtful you're going to break a :birf: with stock tires or blow your transfer case unless you get really stuck on some rocks and try to hammer your way out. But even if you do, those are fixable, as long as you have some friends, some tools, some money, and some time.

I don't like damaging my truck, but then again, if I wasn't going to take it offroad, I would have bought a car. :D

i hope that was just in mud and NOT on the road.

i don't wheel my 40 at all any more since it achieved DD status. the only stuff that's a challenge for it(key word is IT, not me), is the nasty stuff that i don't want to beat it on, or off of.

the 60 is hers, so that's just a lifted grocery getter. makes it easier to find in packed lots :flipoff2:

thanks for all of the input

i think i have been babying mine mainly because i have only had it for about a month + i am using it as a daily driver.

i am gaining confidence in her though.

it definately does not seem like a 19 year old vehicle to me :D

i sometimes get paranoid looking around on this forum because it seems like there is always something wrong with someone's rig :flipoff2:, so i start thinking "is that going to happen to mine?" :D

This I agree with. Mine is going to be a logging road, cross the occasional creek, long distance adventure rig. I WONT rock crawl her, or take her on TIGHT trails where she is going to get all banged up from trees here in Washington.

She is definately OVER built for that, but better over than under I say.

this is good advice for many areas of life! :D

patride,
dude dont start thinking that...thats why the forum is here...ive only had 1 problem with my rig in 2 years and it stilll runs it just runs rough somtimes... still tryin got figure it out..just keep up with the normal upkeep and youll be fine...

you could always lift it and add body protection...to keep it further away from the ground :)

Mine's my DD and trail rig. Until I can get an HJ-47, it will likely always be my
DD. But it's also be my trail rig. And until I get the HJ-47, it'll likely always be
my trail rig. But I have a finite list of mods that it will get. Almost all of which
are to improve its "expidionability". Because some of my daily drives will be
days into the wilderness/desert. :D

Dude, it's a LAND CRUISER, not a road wagon

Ah, but it can be both. Im getting a BJ74 for my trail rig.

Exactly my point. My daily driver is my trail rig. That's what it's for.
