of you Cruiser of course. I am just curious how many of you have the desire to take the top off when the weather gets nicer. Here in the South summer showers pop up without notice and I am wondering if I will actually take it off. Is it a pain?

I bought mine with no top. Ive driven it in the rain, snow, and just plain cold...

You can't beat it on a nice day!!!!!! Don't hesitate.

On a really nice day, treat yourself to the doors off also.... Love it!

Do it! Yes, it is a pain to take off an on, but with 2 or 3 strong people, it's not too bad.

The first time I did it, I broke my hand when the top that was jammed on the two front pipes let go and dropped. Ouch

I take mine off every April and put it back on every Oct for the last 5 years- I'm in MD. If you have a good pulley system set up (did mine with a HF electric winch, rope and pulleys for about $125) it takes about 1.5 hours for the doors and the respective 34+/- bolts. If my wife feels like helping, we're in an out in like an hour.

Also got a full length bikini top from SOR that helps with the rain showers- when the weatherman predicts sunny days

Tip: replace all the bolts with good ss hexdrive or cap heads and get a good extension bit for your cordless drill- makes the job a thousand times easier.

My Cruiser is somewhat of a exhibitionist. Prefers to run arond topless. I took my hardtop off 7 years ago. Bought a softtop and would never have it any other way. Bikini with half doors life is good.

40s are cool ...................... topless is 100 x as cool. That was my #1 reason for buying my first 40

I've not put the top on in 4 years.

My top comes off in July, when it warms up. Then goes back on in August when it cools off....:D

I had to take mine off to get it in my garage. It took me about an hour to dismantle the top and sides on my own. The only issue I had was with the bulk of the top. No problems at all with the weight though.

I'm debating about soft tops since I only had my 40 since November.

Hi All:

Took off the hard top in Spring 1997. Bought a soft top in Autumn of 1997. The hard top sat around until I finally sold it in 2001 (?)

Now, I took off the soft top in 2005. Still have not put it back on!

I run topless and doorless in the Summer; add a pair of soft doors, a bikini top, and a "windjammer" for the colder months of the year! :D

No, this is not my daily driver! :p

Regards,

Alan

Topless is the only way to fly! I put my top back on this fall and I don't enjoy driving the 40 even 1/2 as much. I plan to take if off in the spring and put it into storage. Next winter the bikini and windjammer will get me by.

Mine hasn't been on in two years. You don't have to disassemble it. Just get a couple of people to help you get it off. Soak the bolts with penetrant and hope you don't break them. If the top hasn't ever been off the truck then there are bolts on each side in the back, on the front (top) of the windshield frame and 2 bolts that tighten against the poles right behind the front doors on the tub. Good luck.

Later,

I couldnt see driving it all summer in Charleston with the top....Hard or soft top....You're not going to be happy wondering what it'd be like without the top....especially when you're looking at it thinking "its really just too hot to drive it today"....

At one time it was a seasonal ritual for me to take the top off each spring and put it back on sometime around Halloween.
It's amazing how fast the neighbors learn to recognize the signs that you are getting ready to remove the top and will be rounding up a work detail. Our street would turn into a ghost town as soon as the doors came off.

I finally got tired of the hassle of storing the top and removing/replacing it etc etc. and got a soft top.

My cruiser goes topless as often as possible. In So Cal, I try to go topless year round. Bikini top and half doors for the hot summer days, while winter calls for the bikini top and full doors.

When I lived in Oregon, topless season was from June to October. Call me a wimp, but rain in the stereo and speakers was no fun.

Glad to be living now where the sun does shine!

Bikini top with half doors (or no doors) is the only way to go in the summer.Try it once and a little rain shower won't concern you anymore. You can put big garbage bags over the seats when you have it parked in the rain for a while.

All part of the fun owning a 40.

May 1st to October 31, This year had it out with no top in the snow....

warmer than a snowmobile : )

I have a nearly perfect hardtop and it hasn't been on the Cruiser in 3 years. It's a total PIA-I almost wish I didn't have it. Unfortunately my 40 has become a garage queen and only comes out for wheeling trips in the summer. Since it never rains here between April and November, I keep the top stored at a friend's storage yard.

Same with the doors-they have not been on the Cruiser in years.

I am thinking about a soft top if I keep the beast.
