Around town, 220-240 miles per tank with 285 ATs on stock gearing. Just had it tuned up, plugs, wires, distributor cap and internals, replaced, still on the first tank since the tune up. I can say it runs a LOT better and seems to be doing a little better mpg wise.
I am probably getting me a commuter car this spring. Will pay for itself in not that long (trying to spend under 5grand) and will save wear and tear on the Cruiser. I'll save the Cruiser for the weekends/playtime.
Got a new FJ Cruiser as a commuter car. The "boss" hijacked it.
I barely fit in the new land cruiser, its made like a yukon, but with less room and no onstar... the knees hit the steering wheel in the way in.. head hits the top on the way out
Now I'm back to the 1500 ram and the FJ80 with gas already @$4.00/gal
After a recent tune-up, I'm getting right around 13MPG with mostly city driving, 15MPG highway mostly cruising around 80MPH. According to my scangauge, I should be able to get anywhere from 17-22MPG driving on a flat road at a constant 65MPH. I need to try that sometime.
96 lx450 186,000 miles, slee 4" lift, roof rack, arb bumper, stock gearing with 285's so far getting 9-10 with flat street driving to and from school in sunny ca weather. what gives? does the roof rack make that big of a difference? how do i get it to 12?
i was also thinking about buying a scan gauge, thoughts, pros & cons?

Not sure on the exact size of your 285s, but with mine, my speedo is off. At 220 miles, i am actually at 230 miles according to my scangauge which i set the speedo adjustment on it according to a GPS.
Roof racks can seriously hurt mileage as well depending on size and shape. If its easily removable, and you don't use it all the time, i would remove it and only put it on as you need it if possible.
Also, a good tune up, clean intake/throttle body, newer cats (180K mile one can become a little clogged), new 02 sensors, all of this stuff will help.
i just bought lx 2 weeks ago. i just put my second tank of gas in it tonight. the first week i averaged 10 and tonight was 9. i tried driving with overdrive off to see if it would help. i believe the o2's, plugs, and wires all have been replaced in the last 15,000 miles. maybe ill look into some new cats, and clean the tb. the speedo is prety close, its off by like 3 or 4 miles at 75mph, but still could affect it. tires are 285/75/16. i plan on trying to take the roof rack off after king of the hammers and see how it does.
What year is your 80? edit: Doh, just read it is an LX, therefore 96-97.
I think most 95s are OBD-II and all 96-97s are.
Yes, a scangauge is HIGHLY worth the money.
You can keep a very close eye on the engine temps, be able to correct and have an accurate speedometer, check and clear engine codes (if they are clearable, if not, search the code on here and find out whats wrong).
It's one of the reasons i wanted a 95 or newer 80.
more air in the tires definitely gives you a little bit and making sure your car is tuned up will also help as it will with any car, but i have found that simply not accelerating a lot and trying to keep it under 75 on the highway helps the most so far as saving gas.. i personally drive with out any concern really and pretty much get 250 every tank unless I'm doing all highway driving and am driving really carefully, i have seen 330 on 20 gallons before on a trip in the fall, now that its winter i get less i assume its the cold.
I get about 400 miles to a tank with 285s a 2 inch lift and a roof rack but I have a 4.2 diesel. but as our scottish contributor said it costs about £110 to fill up (about $185) 75% of that is tax. Im in England by the way
9.7mpg's OME, ARB bumper, homeade rear, 4xinnovation sliders, 315's , stock gears, w/or wo drawer system. Within the last year and a half (new plugs, wires, dist, radiator, h2o pump, thermostat) ???????
