How many apricot pits fill up a blower case?

I haven't been this pissed-off in years. I rolled the BJ74 out today for a beautiful late fall Sunday drive. When I hit the fan switch it sounded like a coffee grinder so I had to dig into it. When I pulled the blower motor out apricot pits poured out like a Vegas slot machine paying-off triple 7s:doh:.

Next up, after pulling the evaporator assembly, is a squirrel hunt :mad::mad::mad::bang::bang::bang: I wonder if a belt-fed center fire is enough. :hmm:

So far I have vacuumed up enough of this crap to fill a typical plastic grocery bag. The photos below only show what fell out when the motor first came out. After rooting around at least twice that fell out. I can reach into the evaporator and feel a bunch more but I can't get to it without pulling the whole thing out:mad::mad::mad: :flipoff2:

I haven't been able to figure out how the bastards got that far in. It would be great if someone could chime in with a recommentation on where to put a hardware cloth barrier to keep them out.
 
I wonder how the critters avoid cyanide poisoning when they eat those pits? :oops:

No idea how they would have gotten those in there. Never had that problem thankfully.
 
I don't know how they avoid it. I can only tell you that I found no deceased culprits. That is other than a couple that my Feinwerkbau FWB124 connected with.
 
I have never figured it out either, but the did it to my company truck last spring and one of my cars before that. The company truck blower still vibrates on high, it's never been right again after the initial grinding them up when I turned it on.
 
A few years ago my RHD Mitsubishi Delica developed a gawdawful stench - had to drive with the windows open to avoid puking. When I was trying to find the cause I saw a fleck of green behind a door hinge. Started dismantling and after pulling out a surprisingly large pile of moss from the heater intake got a very dried out chipmunk. How and why will remain mysteries...
 
8 out of 10 critters prefer the Toyota Land Cruiser. :)

I had the same issue on my 80. The issue was behind the fender, next to the hood hinge.. there was an opening that was unobstructed into the cowl. Best picture I could find on a 70... looks like hole in the same spot. I assume to let water out of.

That rectangular hole on the side has to be the entry point. The cowl plenum goes vertical above the blower case like a chimney. It is a squarish opening about 5 by 5 inches and it has a rim about an inch tall. It is kinda visible in this shot. The tube in the upper photo is the wiper link. I pulled the wiper motor as well and you can see the pile of pits that exposed.

We always put the air on recirc in my dads barn to keep the mice out. Would that prevent them getting in in your case?

You need to do a better job of caretaking sir.... :)

I have to agree with Onur here. It's hard for critters to nest in a moving object. :)

It would have helped some but they would have likely piled them on top of the door, resuling in some landing in the blower when the lever was moved off recirc.
 
Moth balls under the hood of the wife’s convertible have seemed to keep the critters out after I discovered a nest a couple years ago. But not before they chewed on the wiring harness. :bang:

I have not found any harness damage. This is an old truck and apparently it pre-dates the use of tasty insulation. Thank goodness.

I have heard moth balls may help. Do you think it made a difference? Did you leave them there all the time or remove them when the vehicle was in use?
