How long will a 80 series tranny last????

I used my '97 and pop's '95 to point out my opinion that the weakness in the 343 is towing. When I say "tight" I mean the feeling of the engagement as it shifts gears. I would almost say mine feels like it slips as it shifts vs. a nice quick engagment. I don't think the towing my 80 has done would have even phased a 442.

...and this is pretty much meaningless without an A442F to compare to. How do you know that an A442F, with similar maintenance/towing as your rig, wouldn't have had this same "weakness"?

My 96 shifts smoother than my 93 did, but my 93 did fine as well, other than "flaring" from 1-2 at parking lot speeds.

I'll use a line that i think landtank first said about the 80 trannys.....we'll let you know when the first one wears out!!

Ditto- my '97 shifts more smoothly than my '93 did, and I had the 1-2 flare on the '93 as well. As for longevity, we'll see!

Has anyone had a tranny failure (new or old) or know someone who does and what possibly caused it?

Not that I know of. Now stop trying to keep us on subject........

Actually, there was this one, but I think I remember that he hammered it hard prior to failure. It is an A440 (FJ80) though.

Hi there... My frend has a 93 1HD-T auto, 38"mudders 4,10 gears with 520.000 kilometers on it so far and no trouble. My 95 1HD-T 80 serie had a manual trans and needed a rebuild after about 180.000.km.

I think Landpimp needed to rebuild the tranny on his 91, so that would be another of those supposedly "bomb proof" trannies.

Smoked one in my 92 1HD-T right at 200,000 Km.

Not really sure about the cause. My guess would be wheeling hard, lack of regular fluid change and driving / 4wd on 37' with 4:11 gearing.

HEAT IS THE BIGGEST KILLER OF ANY TRANNY. If you going to do stupid s*** like I did (going up hill in loose sand) and the tranny has a lot of miles on it, then it's not going to last. But, if you're going to be on the interstate mostly, then you should get many more miles out of it.

I'd have to look at the design of the 343 and 442 and compare the difference, but both these tranny's have two things going for it. They both have low stall TC's and solenoids that control the shifting of the gears. Low stall TC's are good because the maximum clamping of the clutches engage at a low rpm. The solenoids are good because when they fail, you know it pretty quick, and they are easy to replace, depending on your banana level.

Yup, I cooked the A442F in my 1990 HDJ81 with under 140,000 Km. I don't know how it lived the first 130,000 Km.

Heat killed mine; towing a boat up a long hill in hot weather with 35" tires in 3'rd gear (no lockup) and no external cooler. Blew a seal, pump bushing came free and mated with the torque converter.

I have about 400 Km on an Extreme rebuild from Rodney - so far, so good. Temp gauge is sitting on the table waiting to be wired in and an external cooler will be added soon.

I understand that the early JDM A442Fs on the JDMs are not the same as the ones used later in the US 80-Series; I don't know what is different, someone described them as being more like an A440.
