i've heard of issues on these kind of felt filters, especially from the ford camp. that as they are used, they trap sediments and these build up until the flow of atf is restricted causing tranny to overheat. better be religious in changing them out regularly. the screen type of filter allows unrestricted atf flow

Any inline filter should either be or have a bypass. In other words, if it plugs up it should not impede flow.

flushed my tranny by doing a drain & fill 11 or 12 times....if you do the math (a percent of a percent...and so on) after this many drain & fills you get 99.9% new fluid in the system. I Did spend some extra bucks on that toyota atf, but I had just gotten the rig and at 75K miles I figured I'd be good for another 75K more. I'd drive it for 15 miles or so and thru the grears between drain & fills to mix it up real good. I like the trick of pulling the return line off of the radiator and plug flushing it it will same some atf and is faster. Now that I've had the rig for 5+ years and know it alot better, I will do it that way at 150K if I dont decide to pull the pan.

How's your experience with your tranny fluid change?

Drop and change filter replace fluid?

Or

Drop pan change filter use radiator return and let the tranny pull/pump in new fluid?

Neither...every Fall i drain the pan and fill with fresh cherry scented ATF. Once a year, every year is all you need. I'm not a fan of flushing and with 5 or 6 liters of fresh ATF each year the transmission couldn't be happier.

Sounds like Drain and fill is the way to go.

Valvoline ATF? Upgrade to Redline?

I use Valvoline Max Life ATF. Full synthetic and $18 for a 4 qt jug at wally world. I do a drain and fill every other oil change. My transmission loves it.

Mine is a DD if 15K-20K per year.
Bought it with 196K, unknown service on transmission.
I did the complete exchange with the transmission's own pump from the cooler in front. I used about 5 gallons in the exchange.
I now have 303K and no issues.

There many ways for this, choose your own.

I am considering dropping the pan this next time just for the next level of cleaning since I didn't do it the first time.

I bought mine over Thanksgiving with 115k miles and just did a drain and fill recently with 120k miles. The drain plug gasket was the incorrect steel type, so I'm pretty sure it had been at least drain and filled before? Anyways, I topped it off with Amsoil ATF and will probably do another drain and fill in a year or so.

I’ve used napa brand dex3 drain and fill my tranny once a year or every couple years, has 320k never dropped the pan
