I have been tweaking with my 77 40 trying to get it to speed up faster. Just recently i had Mark rebuild the carb to fix a flat spot in the acceleration and it runs better but still not great. It also feels like it has a power band like a 2 stroke bike sometimes. I am wondering if i am expecting too much from this truck. How fast are these things say 0-30? I haven't timed mine but i bet it is close to 15 or 20 seconds. i also get about 7 MPG, is that normal?

Thanks for the help and sorry for my inexperience.

Well to start with are you still at factory gearing? What size tires are you running? The 2F I've worked with is .60 over with a DUI HEI conversion and a header with nothing else done to it and it's not any kind of speed demon with 33s and factory 4.11 gearing. 7 mpg is less than average though driving with a heavy foot can cause that. Is the carb jetted correctly for your conditions (does it bog at any point)? Is the ignition system in good shape (good steady voltage)? Is it getting enough air (ie clean air filter)? What's timing set to? With motors it's always fuel/air/spark, if one of the three variables isn't all there or coming in at the wrong time the motor will show it. Usually when it comes to motors I like to check everything and make sure it's all good before actually messing with it. You say it feels like it has a powerband, where is the sweet spot rpm-wise?

Think tractor, these are built like tractor motors and have about the same performance. Do not expect great acceleration or speed but lots of low end torque. My 76 you could turn the key with it in gear and it would start right up and idle up big hills, could pull anyone out of the mud. It could make it over steeper and bigger hills then any jeep or truck around back in the 80's but it was a slow crawl, but crawl it would.

Yes. 2F & fast are not to be used in the same sentence unless you are referring to how fast it will sink to the bottom of a body of water.

I beg to differ.

No, that was the marshall exclusive storage system for FJ40's much lighter weight than a drawer or box setup.... Ask him about it and i'm sure he'll sell you the diagram.....

Yeah you and Mr. McInness (sp?) both. There are always exceptions. Just like the guy that can find high pinion front 60s all day for a couple hundred bucks .

For those of us that don't see the value in dropping a few G's into a boat anchor, we will continue to drive 2F's that can barely get out of their own way. Not complaining at all, I love my 2F. I think yours is awesome as well, though I would not choose to spend my money in that manner. Fact is, Toyota did not design it to be a "fast" motor.

Edit: Looks like Toad just made me eat my words.

I don't think I want to buy Trollhole's truck...........no hard feelings I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am getting a pertronix from Mark, we'll see if that helps. It is very Jekyll and Hyde. it runs good sometimes and bad others, sometimes within a few miles.

Lol, it's funny about our backseat monsters who creep up and attack when we get up to speed..

2F

I didn't know I had a 2F in my 72 till I checked the block numbers, that also explained the lack of lube to the rockers after I put a new head gasket on it.

Now with a DUI, 2 piece header, and a well tuned and jetted Weber I can out run most Civics off the line. This thing is not about to break the tires loose spinning 33s on stock axles but you can't compare an indestructable tractor motor to a racer. This thing is massive, it carries more coolant and oil than most diesels. We hear poeple complain about speed and weight all the time but how many people have had one come apart without some serious abuse.

on my 2f I have headers with a carter carb. It dumps to much fuel but it runs like a raped ape. 0-30 in about 9.5 seconds. lol. But yes it is indistructable.

I pulled over and let myself by, strange thing about foreward thinking.
