I have put a 79 2f in my 71 and need to hook up linkage from the carb to the gas pedal. I have all the pieces and the pedal for the linkage type system but of course my 71 body had the cable

just wondering if anyone had any tips for the install, I am assuming it will make sense to work from the carb to the firewall then locate the firewall bracket so the link will fit the gas pedal and drill and bolt in place

anything else I need to consider?

Sounds like you pretty much have it handled.

Make sure your pivot on the new pedal is in about the same place as the old one. I could see that working backwrads from the carburetor you may end up with your foot pedal in an unusual position.

I have a 77 carb on a 1F in my 73. Faced the same delima. You have a couple of paths here.

I used my cable and pedal in stock form. There is actually a stock peice, that would have come on early, like 69 or so carbs that mounts on the rear right stud of the carb, that let the stock throttle cable with threaded adjustment end come through it.

On mine, I did not source this factory piece. And I had an aftermarket cable, without the threaded adjustment on the end, due to prior Holley fitment. What I did have was custom piece made from old carb linkage pieces, that accepted the stock barrel end on one end, and had the little ball clamp deal on the other end. From there you would need a ball, just like the one that the 2F linkage peices hook up to. If you look on the back of the carb on the linkage area, there is probably an extra hole on the bottom of the linkage, near the stock ball. I used a ball from my prior Holley, that has a stud on it. Fit perfectly in the hole in the linkage and allowed the ball to project the opposite direction from the stock one. From this you can directly hook up a cable style accel pedal to a 2F carb and make the linkage rotate the proper direction. I used a cable saddle and drilled two holes in the side of the 2F aircleaner and mounted the cable jacket end to the aircleaner. This only works because of the small custom adapter I made between the barrel and ball clip, because it also has some adjustment via some threaded rod on the ball clamp end.

You have to have soem adjustment in it someplace to take up slack in the accel cable and account for stretch over time. The other catch to a setup like this is getting enough pedal movement and cable to acheive wide open throttle. Mine barely makes it, and pedal movement versus accelration is not very crisp. In other words, it takes alot of pedal movement to move the linkage.

Stock, with all the linakge and stuff, you have lever action working for you, so small pedal movements equate to more movement at the linkage.

What you can try though, if you still have the parts, is to use your factory bellcrank as it is called from the 1F carb. I have the parts, but I have not tried to switch it over yet. It pretty much looks like it will work. The bellcrank may need some trimming. But this is the peice that bolts under the two drivers side studs, with the return spring on it. From this you can hook up the factory cable, and then hook up the stock linkage just like a 1F is. I think the movement of the carb butterflies via the linakge is the same.

Seems to me, the 2F style linkage was just a way to get away fromt he stretch and possible failure of the cable system, but after 30 years, the cable is alot easier to replace and adjust then worn little pivot balls.

Give Mark A. a shout; he has a real nice set up to use cable on a 2F carb eliminating the linkage; I had to go this route when switched the 69 fj55 body onto a 79 frame..post # 112 on the 55 forum body transplant thread.....it is a quick and easy switch and works well HTH

I think it is called the Bell Crank set up. I had to install one on my 1976 with the body lift. The factory linkage would no longer work.

Right #66 in this SOR drawing from a 1973.

gas pedal

thanks for the leads thats food for thought. I have the gas pedal and cable from my old set up and all the later linkage stuff so well have to see how that goes. I am at the point now where I need to get it up and running cause I am going to be moving overseas soon and so I have to get busy!
