Does anyone know for sure what the hood insulation is for? I would guess it is honestly noise insulation. Lots of cars dont have it at all .

Mine was in pretty nice shape until some little mouse desided to make a home out it. I am just glad they didnt use my wiring harness.

What would be the downside to just removing the insulation?

its also a fire blanket that's supposed to, in theory, melt off the tabs and fall down and help smother a fire.

Hi, Some degree of sound deadening. Some insulation against heat. However most are so worn out they do little good. Mike

I am without one which does worry me that paint will start peeling. Wish I knew of an aftermarket solution.

Tons of aftermarket options, just google "hood liner"

I just replaced mine with a new one from Toyota. It wasn't that expensive if I remember correctly.

New one certainly looks nicer in the bay.

And yes I had quite a few beers while I was resealing the seams on the hood.

Looks like about 225. Does that sound right to you?

I removed mine when I swapped the v8 in. All I know is my clearcoat was perfect until shortly after it was removed 🤷🏻‍♂️

I lost my liner to an engine fire. My 60's hood looks much better on the passenger side than it does on the driver side now. Kinda sucks what unabated heat does to paint...

I didn't replace any of the liner yet since doing the scoop and side vents..... 2 years in now, 35k or so....Texas heat no issues so far.

that said I have a roll of hood liner that amazon jsut dropped off that I'll do once she comes back from getting the HG replaced ( and all the other - in, there, things...

Amazon product ASIN B00069QLVC

I've seen a few threads on this topic, and one of them mentioned that 80 Series outside the US (Middle East?) did not have a hood liner. I'm skeptical about any actual benefits of the 25 year old, nasty one I pulled from the underside of my hood. I do plan to put some Dynamat clone type stuff up there when time permits. The idea that it's a fire blanket seems a little far fetched to me. I don't think Toyota engineered that into it, but I'm just spit-balling when I say that. I don't have any data.

That’s funny. Mine paint is perfect on the passenger side and “foggy” on the driver side despite manifolds on each side of the bay.

Mine was falling apart too and decided to go with Dynaliner hoodliner. It was big enough to cover the same footprint as the factory one, and even though it has an adhesive back, i added the little black OEM clips to make it more secure.

Does it help with sound? Maybe, but nothing to write home about. I put some seam sealer and second skin damplifier on the underside, and that helps with the "claaaaang" when it closes; now it has more of a thud.

I also had a clang when closing the hood and could see some movement on the top going down rough roads. It was not due to my liner (which was old and gross) but due to the seam sealer on the hood which had also failed due to age.

I think my hoodliner is a fire hazard at this point. It's heavy and saturated with oil and fluids from the previous owner. In addition, the hood skin needs to be resealed to the frame and gives that awful clang every time I shut it. My hood's clear is long gone and the hoodliner has never been removed.

I just like that picture. The ownership of my truck has transitioned more into capturing moments like in your picture than keeping a perfect vehicle. So I am tempted to just pull it out. However I do recognize that keeping important aspects of the truck working properly is what allows it to get me to amazing destinations.

I will add to this thread that while I did not take any sort of measurements having the new liner installed vs none does seem to help the engine heat up faster in the winter.

...the liner also keeps the engine warm for a long time for a nice second or third start in a cold climate.
