I will mount the license plate on the basket once it is completed, until then it will probably get zip tied in place.

FWIW, this summer I removed the top and didn't have a tailgate fabbed up so I just ran without one. I left the license plate in the bed of the 40 all summer... never got pulled over either!

Thanks Matt- Slee and MAF were my best idea sources, they both make some really quality stuff. It is much easier for me to see why they cost so much now.

Hawk, I have been slow with the build up as of late. I can't seem to get my cooler rack bent up with a radius tight enough to fit snug. I am reworking my design to make it happen.

I did mount up the tire carrier part here it is:

My friend comes over the other day and asks if I got the tire carrier done yet or not, I said I can put the spare up there and show you if you'd like. I do. We look at it and talk about it, and I go back to work.

Later we are driving down the road and I hear a loud "PONG," I look in my rear view to see the 35" MTR spare spinning about 8 feet off the ground going head on with an F-150 behind me (I didn't bolt the lug nuts on because I was just showing it to my buddy). Luckly the F-150 missed it and I retrieved the tire unharmed... I was blessed not to hit anyone with it.

Wild times, lesson of the day: Don't use a tire carrier without lug nuts! D'oh!

Oh man! Too funny since no one got hurt.

On the basket, consider bending the outer portion but use 90º corners with gussets in the back along the plane of the bumper where space is a premium.
 
Yeah, that is what I am thinking, I may use some quartered pipe to make a mini "con-ferr" roof rack kind of corner. I am thinking 4" pipe will work well.

I had the weld on the hinge pin break on the way home from picking up my new FJ last week. The tire swung open on the highway, hit the side of the truck then swung back and hit the tailgate. After thinking about how it happened, when I rebuild my carrier it will be twice as strong as it was. The force exerted hitting a large bump with a 35" tire levered out from the truck is tremendous. The hinge pin on my carrier is very similar if not identical to the one you have although the welds didn't look as strong as your will be. Hope it all works out well for you. ....Steve

Man, glad everything was okay.

I am going to gusset a bit more before strapping the tire down. Controling all the levering forces is quite the task.

Damn dude, thanks for sharing that. Sure looks good with that mounting plate installed.

So how's the rigidity of it with the tire's weight on it throughout it's swing?
Any instability or flexing when it's perpindicular to the bumper?
How did you end up welding the base of the main pin?
Did you just weld it do the top of the main bumper tube or did it need reinforcement inside the tube?
Any pics of that part?

My hinge pin and lock pin and pad should be here anyday from Lance at IPOR. Getting excited for the build. :bounce:

If you mean slit 4" pipe lengthwise and use the cut halves stood up as corners, that would have the addl advantage of providing a place to line with camper tape to keep scratches to a minimum on the cooler's corners.
 
Length wise yes, but I would only want 90 degree "bends" so you would have to quarter it.

Thanks Hawk, I can't wait to see what you come up with too!

Lets try to answer all your questions:
Rigidity throughout the swing?... a non issue, it is super stout, no flex.

When it is perp? Yeah, a little, I only had it bolted to the crossmember with half the bolts, I kept ruining the 1/2" bits I had. There is some flex, maybe a half inch or so when it is all bolted up, but I have a plan to stiffen it up.

Welding the pin? We drilled a 1 1/2" hole all the way through top to bottom and welded it at the top and the bottom with a tig. Nothing inside.

Here is a pic for you... you can hardly see the weld underneath, we left around a quarter of an inch to weld to.

I would like to stiffen up the area around the spindle and I have two real options, the first is to create an additional brace that would extend from the end of the lower portion of the carrier to the area just outside the tail light. This would keep some of the "flexing" and "twisting" forces a bit more in check by transmiting those loads to the cross member.

My other option would be to weld a thicker peice of angle to the back of the lower section (near the spindle) and tying that into the bracket on the crossmember that is already there.

Any suggestions?

is the twisting force in the box tube that the spindle is mounted to or is it on your brackets the the cross member? what size are the bolts you are using right now? just looking at it if there is any twisting from the box tubing i dont think it would do any damage or come apart.
