Hinge rebuild service - maybe???

After I pressed in the 40's bushings, I still had to run an 8mm bit through. The bushing will distort some, at least doing it the Bubba way, like me, in the vise.

Had this happen on the front axle bushings, also. Mr Longfield said that's normal, but I don't like taking material from the bushing. Seems counter productive.
 
We will see if delancy's bushings require similar treatment. When I get them next week, I will find out. Did you drill them or ream them by hand?
 
I got Delancy's hinges and bushings in today. Hopefully tomorrow, or the next day, I can do a little surgery on them, and see if there is any magic left. We will see.

Tomorrow, I will try and get a coat of paint on them. Maybe Monday, it will be go time for assembly with the bushings. Cross your fingers... All pins are matched to there respective hinge, and I have my hopes that the bushings will press in easily. If they do, we are in like Flint.
 
I haven't gotten that far yet. The paint is still drying! I don't want to drill the hinges at all. If needed, I will take a little off of the bushing. I will find out soon though.
 
I tested Delancy's hinges today with a bushing and it looks like they will press in without too much fuss. I am struggling with the fit of the pin in the bushing. It will be a very snug fit if I force them in. I was wondering about shaving down the pin below the knurl by about 5/1000 's or so. It would make life nicer, not screw up the knurl (which keeps things tight), and not reduce the thickness of the bushing.

What do you think about that?

Let me ask about the bushing fit. You didn't have to enlarge the hinge hole, to accept the bushing, just pressed them in? I have the same bushings and thought they were too big to press, but I really don't know much about such things.

I guess I could chuck up the pin, in the drill press and sand down some. I don't like the idea of drilling that bushing out.
 
I have not pressed it in yet, but was contemplating it today. It looks like it will start, with a tight fit. Once I try it I will no more about it. The pin is hardened steel, so it may need a lathe to take it down. I am just thinking here. It will take alot to impress Delancy, so, I am not rushing into this!
 
That's right, they are hardened. Man, I need a lathe. I'm thinking it will take a long time to wear out the bronze bushing, even if it's reamed out alittle.

It would be fun to try a hinge with the turned down pin, seems like the best idea, yet.

You've pegged me wrong. I'm really a cheap date that's easy to please, only holding myself to an unattainable standard.

That said they look good to me and duly impressed.

Considering this is a trial run, would it be advantageous to search for a bushing that's Pig hinge rebuild specific?

The brass bushings were 7.92mm ID, if memory serves, yet the pins are 8mm.

If a 7.80mm (marginally smaller than the pin) ID bushing were sourced, would there be enough brass left inside of the center hinge?
 
Obviously the plastic oem bushings were very thin, and they have held up reasonably well. The best option would be to source a bushing that will not require resizing

I may take a pin and a bushing to my machine shop buddy's and mic them. I will clean the bore of the hinge also and mic them again. Before, they measured approx 9.5 mm. I have not found a heavy duty weight bearing bushing with such thin walls. However, there is an air compressor mfg plant here and the operator of one of the CDC lathes claims to be able to cut the bushings Delancy provided to the spec needed. I will find out.
 
I had to rethink turning down the pins. This should not be done because the non knurl end of then pin would be too small and would be sloppy on the bottom section. If you just turned the middle, you would still have to push the larger non knurl end through the bushings to get to,the bottom.

I am going to research the custom bushing option/modified Delancy bushing option. It seems that this may be the better way to go.
