I've been searching for a solution on this forum and online and can't quite pin this one down. I have a 96 FJ80. I drive 22 miles each way to and from work and about 20 of that is interstate. It started about 2 weeks ago when it was a 100 deg here in Tucson yesterday 107. Most of my drive is at 65-70 and the AC works great. About the last few miles on the way home the speed limit jumps to 75. I soon as I hit 75 my AC stop blowing cold. Slow down a little and it comes back on within a few minutes. A few weeks ago when I had to drive to Phoenix at 4 in the afternoon I was driving into the sun at 75 and the AC cut on and off about every 5 min. On the way home a few hours later, sun to my back and a few degrees cooler but same speed AC ran great. Checked my AC pressure and at first it was at 32psi and 305psi at 1500 rpm. Bled it down to 27psi and 275psi and no change in performance. Any suggestions guys. This one has me stumped

What are your temps doing when the unit shuts off? You may be reaching the AC shutoff temp.

My engine temps are in the normal range. But I also know that Toyota has that null spot in the gauge. The needle never passes half way.

I believe AC cuts out at approximately 227*F.

All classic symptoms of insufficient airflow. How old is the radiator?

What are the cutoff temps set at?

226F

I just reworked the Eaton fan clutch on my '97 with 20k cst and haven't seen over 198 on my scangauge, even in traffic.

^^^^ This is the first step, simple and inexpensive. Once you know the fan is good, if there is still a problem, move to other things. I prefer the ultra-gauge.com bigger display, etc.

Have you done a poll to see who did the mod and turned into a paranoid freak?

For his 96 a scan/ultragauge works, for my 94 it won't. Even if I could run scangauge I'd prefer a clean dash/column/cluster and to spend $1.50 on resistors and a bit of my time vs the money on scangauge.

Plus, a modded analog temp gauge in the stock cluster with an understanding of what it should be doing under varying conditions is arguably much more useful for the regular task of glancing at and monitoring gauges/conditions.

After a couple thousand miles to learn how to interpret different conditions I am extremely happy with the linked temp gauge fix and see no need to follow through with my original plans for a separate, dedicated water temp gauge.

Just get a ScanGauge or UltraGauge, this mod will turn you into a paranoid freak.

Yep, it has that effect on some, it could be effectively argued that the psychological issues may have predated the gauge?:hillbilly: Others simply gain a better understanding on how the motor works. Things like; under load, temps go up, is normal operation.

Didn't need to. Turned me into one and I got enough PM's after I publicly removed mine confirming their same thoughts. It was a very cool mod at the time but totally unnecessary if you have either SC or UG.

You don't have a choice so its moot.

Yes...arguably.

Actually I do. If I had a hardon for that much information it would be a thousand times more work than OBDII vehicle + scangauge but could be done. But, all I have to do is glance at the factory water temp gauge and see (now accurately) what is going on for the one bit of data from a scangauge that I care about in regular driving.

Just because it turned YOU into a paranoid freak doesn't mean it'll have the same impact on others. ToolsRUs pointed that out. Plus your water temp situation was a bit extreme and unique IIRC.. though eventually resulting in a great company name and a massive amount of useful troubleshooting info posted to the board.

Edit: I am curious how many people removed vs kept the mod. Though we'll never know..

Ultragauge saved my butt in Death Valley after I kept popping a fuse intermittently and losing all gauges and power windows, sunroof plus overdrive. I thought it was going to be a long slow drive back to the Bay Area untill the gauge popped a VSS code. Turned out my VSS sensor was loose and I'm assuming shorting out.

It took 10 15amp fuses for the code to show up in Mojave. We tightned it up and were good to go.

I also depended in the ultragauge for temperature readings since I accidently pulled the temp sensor wire out of the sender while using a strap wrench on a bigger wix oil filter.

Not worth it which is why its moot. No one, even me, would go to that much effort. So the analog mod works GREAT and I am totally behind it for that purpose. But for those with OBDII it doesn't make sense especially since having SOMETHING that can quickly decode a CEL can be had for a few bucks oh and it will also give you digital feedback on a myriad of sensors at eyesight. Different strokes.

But it does, which is why I made the comment. Not all, but enough for me to make the statement.

That thread, although extremely long and sometimes frustrating, was so utterly useful to me to try and wrap my head around the entire cooling system and the physics of it all and the testing methodology/non-methodology. I know others either got a good laugh or good info from it. At least I hope so :(

And yes, I did ultimately get a great company name out of it :grinpimp:
