Hey all,

I have an 80 with a 1fz, when driving my engine was making a weird noise at 4000-5000rpm that was kinda of a vibrating / scrapping noise. Just sounded unhappy. After driving for a bit trying to figure it out I smelt coolant and the fan had broken the radiator, right at the bottom before the plastic tank.

Defiantly need a new radiator but wondering if anyone has any input about the cause For the fan to go through the rad I'm guessing the engine mounts are bad, could that also be throwing the drive train out of alignment causing the noises??

Let me know what you think, I'm a bit stuck with this one and can't see a thread about it

Engine mounts more than likely bad/broken. Torque causes engine to twist impacting the radiator with the fan.

Legend thanks mate, though so just wanted a second option, didn't want to buy another rad and the same thing happen

@JacobsBarn80

What were you doing, driving conditions, when this happened ie: very rough bouncy track??

Any recent/significant accidents or impacts?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start with the radiator itself, has it come loose in it's mounts? Other than the direct damage by the fan blades, is the radiator firmly in place?

Has the outer frame of the radiator come apart (can happen IME with all brass style radiators).

Next check for a bent/broken/warped fan blade(s), loose nuts/studs attaching the fan clutch to the water pump, or the fan itself coming loose from the fan clutch.

Also check to see if the water pump shaft is loose/wobbly (coming apart internally), that could cause the fan to hit the radiator.

Next check motor mounts, motor mount brackets, frame, etc,etc

Post up some photos of all the above.
