High praise for the Pioneer speaker replacement behind stock grille!

I did the fronts awhile back and it does make a huge difference.

Very easy to install as outlined above. Only thing I did different was solder the factory plug direct to the speaker terminals without any extra wiring. Also a slightly different spacer.

If you want to replace all the speakers, you can find a subwoofer replacement at MCM electronics. I bought one ($11) and ended up not using it as my original subwoofer is still in good shape.

I finished installing the 2 dash speakers last nite.

First, at driver side, remove the 4 screws below the dash & pull out the panel. You will see that my dash speaker is one piece unlike others that have separate mounting plates.

Here is the OEM Pioneer & the NEW Infinity 3.5"

The dimension between the mounting holes in the dash is 4-13/16" so I have to cut off the ears of the OEM's speakers & bolted them to the new Infinity's mounting holes to extend the connection.

The next picture showed how it fitted well.

One VERY IMportant thing to do is to tape the new speaker's terminal very well to isolate them from touching the steel hole of the dash. IF you don't , it will ground the speakers & sound funny.

I cut off the wires form the OEM's connector & soldered them to the new Infinity's...again Black to black(+ve)!

Voila, It works!



P.S. If you don't want the mid-bass goes to this dash speakers, connect the inline capacity (100 microfarad) that comes with the box in series to the positive wires (black in my case). I didn't take picture for this part because I did it in a later day after I replaced the 4" subwoofer at the center console.

Now the passenger side!

The key is to put a 3/8" to 1/2" spacer (faucet washer will work) and push the OEM amplifier further inward to make room for the new speaker.

Then do the same as the driver side, cut off the ears of the OEM's mounting plate and bolted them to the infinity speakers.

Everything looks great!





P.S. Again, don't forget to connect the supplied inline capacitor in series to the +ve black wire to filter out the mid bass so they can all go to the subwoofer.

Weathering tape...$5

Waffler for 4" speakers... $6

Plus my free labor....2 hrs each at total of about 6 hrs...I was going on a learning curve,,,very slow.

Recent update. I installed the Pioneer Speakers in my 97. The sound is incredibly good. I can't believe that it's the same stock head unit. I'm thinking that more speakers are on the way. Has anyone done a 6x9 setup in the rear?

I can feel the BASS now from the dash! It never happen before even with the factory Subwoofer.

All you need is to cut the wires of the OEM speakers and splice them to the wires of the new speakers with mechanical coupler that you can get from any hardware store or home depot, see the red coupler in the picture below. Some may prefer soldering.

I pulled the wires on the little dash speakers. No biggie. I had an issue with the wiring getting caught on the window motor and disconnecting...FYI... The front speakers fit real good using the oem covers. The speakers fit in the holes good and you will find screws pretty easy to install them. Just don't poke a hole in the speaker like I did my first set...

If you leave the stock dash speakers in, they make a great external speaker system for your CB...

Does anyone know the size speakers for the very back? The little ones way up top, I guess would be for the 3rd row seating in a US 80.

I think I am going to install the in-line capacitors (100 microFarad) to the +ve wires of the infinity dash speakers to block the low end bass going to the dash. They came separated in the box and I didn't put it in. Now that I got the Tang Band woofer installed, I should do this one day.

Installed the wally world 6.5" pioneers yesterday. Much, much, much better. I've never seen anything like those UFO looking stock speakers and hope never to see or hear anything like them again.

I need to go ahead and disconnect the buzzing tweets in the dash until their replacement gets priority (if ever)

The 4" rears will be done in the next couple of weeks.

This thread really helped me out. I have a '96 LC and was in blown speaker purgatory, debating what to try to do - salvage yard speakers (yech!), or something else.

I just installed the Pioneer speakers that I ordered based on this thread, and because of all the great discussion and illustrations, I was able to get it done over my lunch hour!

I've got the 1643's and they sound good - got them on amazon for around 25 bucks. I just used the Pioneer grill and like the way it looks. I'm normally anal about that kind of stuff, but actually changed my mind when I was installing them. The 44's look to be same as 43's just more juice so they should fit, but I know for sure these 43's do.

I just installed the Pioneer TS-G1643R (6.5) as well on my driver`s door (fit with no cutting etc.) My original (Pioneer PN 86160-60160) was starting to sound scratchy back in the fall so I removed it. When I compare the two (pass side is still orig) I didn`t really notice any difference. Perhaps the stk Lexus speakers were better than the stk Land Cruiser speakers.

I was looking at the pioneer 6.5" TS-A1684R for the front doors. They have a mounting depth of 2 1/8" and a cut out of 5", will they work? I do not care about re-using the stock grille.

FYI the Pioneer TS-G1644R speakers are currently on sale at Best Buy for $37.49 a pair, going to pick up a pair after work today Will these fit in the back if I don't care about using the stock grilles?
