High praise for the Pioneer speaker replacement behind stock grille!

Just put in the ts-g1644r's in the front using provided grills, going to do the rear tomorrow hopefully. Question for those that used factory speaker covers...do you still have your Pioneer grill assembly (x2) that you could send me? I want to experiment with painting them to match interior. I like the black look but again want to see what it would look like.

Install went quick once I stopped brain hemorrhaging.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but have a question about the speaker wire adapter plug. Crutchfield says that there is no adapter compatible for the 1993-1996 model years available, but lists one for 1997 model year. Is there really a difference between the 1993-1996 vs 1997 plugs? The adapters for my 1993 are long gone and one of the POs ran speaker wire from the dash to each speaker and the wiring quality is poor. I would like to just plug in and go. Any help would be appreciated.

Using a multimeter determine which is the Positive (+). Solder or Crimp this wire to the + on the speaker.
The other wire by default has to be the Negative (-). Solder or Crimp this wire to the - on the speaker.
If you want to run new wire keep in mind that these had a preamp and that the wires are likely wired into those amps located in passenger side rear quarter panel and front passenger foot well.

Thread revival (but I think it's best discussed here!)

I found a pair of the pioneer speakers the OP made this thread on. Their mounting requires 42mm space.

I took my door panels off my 93 hdj81 limited, and measured. Only 38mm (1.5 inch) of space behind the door metal before it would hit the window channel.

Since the oem speakers are inversed, the aftermarket pioneers would actually be shallower in the FRONT, so I am thinking I could use 5mm spacer on them to fit them behind the stock grills.

For those of you with the very limited space in the door do to window channel, is this what you did? By spacing out the pioneers around 5mm do you think the cone will have clearance issues with the factory grills?

Only other option I can think is to put in 4 inch speakers into the front doors instead, which would be smaller.

Pics attached.

I basically ended up using foam weather stripping between the door & speaker frame to give it enough clearance off that vertical metal bar. Then I trimmed back parts of the fiberboard to fit the posts in the factory grill, & then glued & siliconed them in place.

This may or may not apply to the Pioneers, but I'll throw my info out there.

In my 93 the stock speakers screwed into the factory "housing" via a screw on the backside of the bracket going into the backside of the speaker magnet. The speakers I bought (4" Boss blah blah blah top end for them) had a simple 4 point screw flange 'slots' that many speakers have....

I ended up using a 3.5 (maybe 4"?) hole saw in my drill press and drilled the backside of the stock speaker plastic housing.... so basically I had the stock mounting flanges but nothing on the backside of it.

This didn't resolve the flange attachment issue - so I went a tad unconventional.... I used (had lying around) Copper high temp RTV (dries solid) to "glue" the speakers to the stock flanges.... worked flawlessly, and if anything is now acting as a damper - no rattling.

The speakers I have didn't fit with the stock grills 100%, but about 95% (they are there, but a little cockeyed).

Unfortunately I don't have photos because it was one of those "kinda fed up with the options I don't have... and now to try something weird.... and don't really want to document it"....

since we're talking about this, is there a problem if the speaker touches the window guide?

I fitted the least deep kicker speakers I could find, but once screwed in, they do touch the window guide.

I honestly don't know, I DOUBT it, but.... *shrug*
Not even sure if they are touching. Looks like they are, but could be 2,000 thou away :hillbilly:
