Hey guys,

I just finished up desmogging and rebuilding my carb. I got it all back together and after chasing a few water leaks am ready to start figuring out my idle issue.

While rebuilding the carb I tested everything to make sure it functioned properly.

It cranks and idles but at 1800 ish rpm. I’ve uninstalled the choke cable to see if that was the issue. I’ve turned both idle mixture and idle speed screws to see if that would make a difference. No go.

My only thought would be maybe I hooked a linkage up wrong?

Any pointers would be helpful. I’m at my wits end with this motor. The plan was to fix it and ride this summer before a swap next winter.

Post some pics of your carb, linkage and engine bay in general?

Alright. Started her up this morning with the ac idle up screw back out a little bit to where even if the ac was on it wouldn’t change the idle and it stayed at around 1400 with choke out and no choke. Here’s some pictures of my linkages.

First I’d check that the throttle blades are closing all the way. Look down inside, and/or you can unhook the linkage and make sure.

Are you adjusting the idle speed screw and not the fast idle screw? Blue would be area idle screw is and red is fast idle (when the choke is on).

Once you’ve verified that, then I’d look for vacuum leaks and check timing.

Your linkage also looks setup different than mine. But that could be a year difference?

Looking at your pics again, I think your linkage rod might be turned 180 degrees. There’s a long arm and a short arm, the long arm goes at the carb end (pointing down).

I'm thinking this too. Something looks goofy here.

I also feel like the short rod that goes down and to the right from the blue circle ends up being horizontal. I'll have to check my carb later.

Please do and get back to me. I’m at work and haven’t been able to mess with it but will pull the air cleaner tonight.

If I’m recalling correctly I don’t think my throttle blades closed all the way before I put it back on.

Here’s how both my 87’s are.

I gotta pull this thing off this afternoon anyway, secondary vacuum pot isn’t working 🙄

I think it’s as easy as flipping the rod around. Don’t lose the little clips for the ball & socket joints!

Linkage looks way more better.

Fire it up and rev it a bunch!

I have another question. Is this what my carb is supposed to look like at rest? I feel like the blade being altogether vertical is a problem? I can close it but I have to turn the choke mechanism counter clockwise 90 degrees. It’s spring loaded so it goes back to the picture.
