I was reading this oil thread, and came across this:

1) Mobil 1 0w-40. This is a great oil, but some have had high consumption with it, others can't find it.

Seems to sum up my situation. My '97 80 is at 140K. The thing runs like a top, but seems to lose more oil than I'd expect - 1/2 litre per month, lets say. The plugs are clean, the block looks clean, the floor is spotless .. yet I seem to be falling victim to the condition described in the quote above - "...high consumption"

So my question is this -

What have you guys switched to when facing this problem? I'd like to stick to synthetic (been running M1 0w40 synthetic for 75K now).

Appreciate any input,

TY

Holy crap, where you been at?

Hey - he lives!

Switch to Shell Rotella Syn T. Great stuff. Now I only use M1 when the store is out of Rotella. Since it's stout enough for diesels, this happens.

Yep, Rotella Syn. Will save you some coin, too.

My high M1 0w-40 consumption was reduced to what I was previously accustomed to seeing, via either Rotella or M1 in the 5w-40 Turbodiesel grade.

if you drive 200 miles a week, and a litre is about a quart, that is 1 qt about every 1500 miles. In my opinion, that is not bad. I was using standard M1 and was having the same problem. I switched to the High Mileage version and my consumption went down significantly. I am now adding about 2 Qts over a 6 to 7K change interval.

Probably the oil you're using is too thin. I bet you're getting good gas mileage though (good for 36's anyway..). Just switch to a thicker grade oil

Single again? :hillbilly:

Hope you deciede to stick around a bit longer this time aroud, T.

Mot :)

Rotella or Delo...

x2.

Rotella is worth a shot. A lot of folks have been happy with it. Didn't work for me. The seaps I had, seaped more and I got a new seap at the valve cover gasket. I changed it out, but in general the consumption was too much for my stomach. I went back to Delo 15W-40.

I use Mobil One 10W30, no problems, but If I can get Rotella Syn I would try it for comparison with my second Cruiser.:hhmm:

I use Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 with a toyota filter and burn no oil in the 5000 mile oil change interval.

Right answer. The High Mileage 10w-40 should also decrease consumption.

Went to my local Canadian Tire store this afternoon after striking out at the Shell commercial outlet (funny, they wouldn't part with a mere 8 quarts :p ). The CT store had 4 quarts left, but another 24 coming in on the 7th, so I may just grab some for my upcoming oil change.

Miss you guys .. I'll try not to be a stranger. . . .

Hmmm...Bedliner is going to be finding it's way onto my purty rig in a rather minor, purely asthetic way soon so maybe I'll post some eye candy. I might even be holding a wrench in the process!:flipoff2: :flamingo:

Peace,

TY

Mine burned of a quart of 0w-40 every 500 miles with only 82K on the odometer. I switched to Mobil 1 5w-40 diesel truck and that changed to a quart every 2000 or so. I'm happy with that and its been running on it for the last 18 months.

Mine gets the Mobil One High Mileage 10w-30. very little consumption. They sell at Walmart for pretty cheap in the gallon containers. It's absolutely the only thing I buy at Walmart.
