All of the sudden oil light came on , added oil. But after 500mi came on again and now it came on 2x with in 150mi interval and added 1qt every incident. Need help, what could be wrong?

Dipstick read was at the lower line.

If I understand you correctly, you have added 3 qts of oil over 800 miles. I think you are burning or leaking oil.

Check for obvious leaks.

Check, and replace if necessary, the PCV valve. Good advice is to plan on replacing PCV grommet at same time, as it is likely hard as a rock.

Check spark plugs for obvious & heavy oil residue.

Check engine cylinder compression.

Check coolant for oil.

You can only be leaking or burning oil. I presume you must be burning the oil, as leakage at the rate you report would generally be obvious.

Have somebody drive behind you watching for smoke. On the highway find a long dip going down and then back up. Coast down the hill in nuetral and then floor the gas on the way up. Have your buddy be watching for a cloud of smoke.

The light comes on when the pressure is low. If the oil is low 1 quart the light will not come on. One would think with that much oil loss there would be a puddle under the 80 or a stream of blue smoke out the exhaust. What ever it is doesn’t sound good.

There is no low oil pressure light, just a low oil level light.

PCV acting up or an internal engine mechanical problem or what should be a very visible leak if it is going through that much oil.

Phil-In the 80, the light comes on when the level is low, not the pressure. I believe the only pressure monitor is the pressure guage. I agree this does not sound good. To leak this much, his truck would leave a trail of 10w-30 whereever it went. I would also look for oil in the coolant. It has to go somewhere and 3 quarts in 800 miles should be easy to find.

edit-CDan has faster fingers than me.

Ditto, check PCV valve.

If its clogged the crankcase pressure may be forcing oil up the dipstick tube (and any other place it can leak).

If your rings are worn you might be getting piston "blow by" but you would likely see some blue smoke and foul out some plugs pretty quickly.

Look for obvious signs of a leak on the outside of your engine. 3 qts. in 800 miles is a lot.

What kind of oil are you using? Recently change? I found my truck uses Mobile 1 at about a qt every 500 miles, so after trying Mobile 1 once, I switched to Rotella T Syn 5W-40 and have no comsuption issues over 3K miles.

My bad!

When Rob turnned over his 80 more then a quart was lost and no light. At what point does the light come on?

some 80 are more sensetive than others, I cant remember exactly how much mine came on at but IIRC it was more than 1 qt and less than 2

Hi everyone. So far there is no visable leak, just replaced PCV valve/groumet last 6mos, checked coolant (ok), will check spark plug today, and smoke then compression. Currently I'm using 10-30 castrol syntec blend.

Thanks
Robert
