BTW whats the name of that shop?
(for search reasons only)

It's not at a dealer. It's a private party sale that's not listed yet and learned about it from a friend.
The dealer shots were from another poster trying to help out and provide an example truck at a lower price.
Thanks everyone! I'll keep looking.

Wow $4,000 seems like a great deal - congrats! Sounds like this one is way off so I'll keep looking or he may decide to come down on price.
Do you guys think lockers are a big deal for my intended purpose and, how much do they add to the price?
Thanks again!

Factory lockers are talked up a lot and are great if you can find them, however don't let it hold up your search. The difference in asking price for a locked rig vs unlocked is often the same or more than it would take a add lockers after the fact, plus aftermarket lockers (such as harrop) will likely be better in the long run. For someone just getting into landcruisers it's unlikely you'll need lockers out of the gate anyways.

Focus on finding a clean well maintained example and go from there.

Agreed. At this point overall condition is paramount. That is unless you specifically wanted a beater to wheel like you stole it.

There’s a nice ‘96 posted in a fb group right now that I’m sooo tempted to pick up. If you’re on there, it’s on the Toyota 80 Series page. In MN, although it’s not native to that state.

Patience. look at as many in person as you can, drive them and learn what you need and don't want. Be ready to act quick. People travel all over to look at and buy the desirable ones.

This is the advice I'd give to anybody who's currently looking to buy a "nice clean" 80 series Land Cruiser.

When i bought mine 4 years ago i found very early on that you need to have MONEY IN HAND, because the nice ones GO REALLY QUICK.

The next thing that became very apparent to me after a few months of looking local, i needed to be willing to travel across the country to expand my search area.

I spent a total of 6 months looking before i found my truck, and i traveled to 4 different states while looking.

So if your really ready to buy, you need to make it a point to search the want ads everyday, have funds in hand, and be willing to travel to go look.

Gotta say the OP is in a great location to find rust free vehicles.

I found this last year in So Cal. 96 FJZ80. $3800 No lockers, needed front brakes, new egr, and belts and hoses. 263k but runs strong. Cali car so no rust. I don't think its ever been offload. Needed work but I do my own so I went for it. Love my FJ!!

If you're not afraid of a little bit of work:

1992 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80

1992 Toyota Land cruiser fj80

or if you're willing to spend that kind of cash i bet you could snag this for 10K

1996 Toyota Land Cruiser

FWIW i think you'd be better off buying on the low side, wrenching and learning about your cruiser. When you're out in the middle of nowhere and something goes wrong you probably are gonna want to know how to limp it home.

What I've learned from buying and driving a land cruiser personally. The difference between a good running fj and a fjz80 is immense . More power. If you have any reason to think you'll need all 3 lockers , buy an fjz80. If you dont , go ahead with an fj80. And unless you are spending on the upper spectrum of prices, your best is to either sock away some spending money for repairs and or be prepared to haggle . Also..few will get why you are spending $4,000-20,000 on a used suv that barely does 75 mph. Pay no mind to them, they dont get it , and they never will until the road ends and the real travel begins.
