Help! Think I separated one of my inner CV joints.

Hey all, been lurking for a while and finally have something worth talking about. I just got my BP-51's from Slee for my 13 LC. In the process of installing the drivers side front strut, while prying on the lower control arm to remove the stock unit the wire ties I used to hold up the knuckle broke and the whole unit fell away from the truck..when this happened I felt and heard a slight click and noticed the inner cv boot was stretched way out. I assumed that the cv had slipped off the spline but after unsuccessfully trying to get the knuckle back into position with the SPC UCA, it appears that I may have separated the CV joint. I assume this because i cannot get the spindle to vertical position and when I turn the hub the inner boot get twisted. I used mechanics wire to do the passengers side and everything went together without a hitch. I guess my question is if anyone has heard of inner CV joints coming apart like that? And if so, can you just try to line up the joint and pop it back together? Or should I skip even trying and pull the whole axle and replace the joint? Anything suggestions you guys could throw my way would be much appreciated. My rig only has 13K miles on it so it's safe to assume this was caused by mechanic error vs worn CV..

Doubt it will be a throw away cv bearing & Shaft assembly but you may need to pull it and repack before you refit the shaft. How's the boot? Also you may like to consider a diff drop kit while you are at it if the BPs are giving you 45mm or more lift.

Sounds as though one of the snap rings that retains the shaft or star/cage/balls let loose. Bill is correct on opening it up for inspection. What's your general New England location? If you are close by, I could give you a hand.

Thanks for your input guys. I plan on pulling the whole axle to do a complete inspection. I just need to pick up a puller large enough for the hub. Bjowett, I'm located in the Concord NH area, I appreciate the offer but hopefully once I get the axle out it's just something simple. I was thinking of installing a diff drop kit after seeing the axle angle when I completed the passenger side yesterday. Billfish, I will call Slee today to see if he has one. If he doesn't, any suggestions to source the drop kit? I have built quite a few rigs out of my home shop over the years. But this is my first late model Cruiser. I gotta say that after putting it on the lift and looking it over I'm impressed with the build quality on these 200's.

The best diff drop kit I found was from Marks4wd. It ships out of Australia and arrives pretty quickly. I'm sure you can speed it up with an extra cost but it's a very solid kit. Slee is installing mine today.

Thanks angelo1, didn't see a kit listed on slee's site. Just placed my order with marks4wd. How long did it take to get yours from Australia? I took the DHL shipping option.

For those of you that have this kit / diff drop. How is it? Thoughts? Pics?

Mine has been installed over 6 months. No issues.

This is the kit you get.

Didn't get a chance to work on the truck today. I'll try the punch and hammer method tomorrow. I hope to install the rear springs and shocks tomorrow as well. I'll take pics and post just in case anyone is interested.

Or if you want to make it and install yourself here's how. Very straight forward. (Not all the kits you can buy include the rear packer.)

200 series front Diff Drop

The exact thing happened to me when I was over extending the lower control arm during the installation of my lift.

@bjowett is right; it was the snap ring that holds the bearings/cage in place. I ordered a rebuild kit from Toyota (new snap rings, boot, and grease). Took the broken stuff out, cleaned it up, added the new parts, and got it all buttoned back together. Cost me about $40, and a few hours in labor.

I'll see if I can find the thread on it....

Mscruiser, thanks for the link to your build thread. That's one nice 200. I'm just starting my build, but hope to have my rig in your league some day. The pictures are very helpful but did you remove the entire inner CV? Or did you just remove the axle to clean up then re assemble the inner CV on the truck? Hard to tell from the pictures.

Billfish, great write up on the DIY diff spacers. Looks pretty straight forward. I made something similar for my sons 4-Runner a couple years back. Unfortunately I already pulled the trigger on a kit from Marks4wd. I'm lucky to have a machine shop at my disposal, and used to take advantage of that in the past. However, as I get older and my family gets bigger there seems to be less and less time for working in my garage. So I have been sourcing more and more of my build components, letting others do the engineering and fabrication. That way I can enjoy what time I have, installing mods on my rigs. New to the 200 forum, but I've built some pretty unique rigs over the years. Mostly early American muscle cars for the last few years. Cars started to get boring so I recently decided to build a few trucks. Caught the 4WD fever again after purchasing a 2014 Jeep Wrangler AEV Jk350. Excellent truck but I soon realized that I would happily sacrifice a little Offroad ability for a lot more refined driving experience. Once I get the 200 put back together I plan on putting the Jeep on the market. I keep all my stuff very well maintained and someone is going to get a top notch jeep in the near future.

About a week

Are you guys seeing any difference in the CVJ internally? I ran into this exact problem last week while installing an ICON suspension for a friend. I have installed a lot of suspensions on various Toyota's minus 200's and have never ran into this problem.
