Anyone know what turbo assembly is used in the 'ol Safari kits? Seeing as how mine has been installed for almost 70k and its the only real wearable part I'd like to pick up a spare at some point just to have.

I thought I recall them being off a Volvo but don't remember for sure.

Mot has a complete system AFAIK. Probably more than what ur looking for.

Ya I just need the turbo unit itself. But maybe I'll pick his brain in case he knows.

They should be rebuildable if yours ever does fail. Most turbo rebuilders should be able to rebuild the unit for around $300-600 depending on what all is worn and needs replacing.

Air Power Systems (APS) Safari intercooled turbocharger systems

Just thought I'd update this thread for those folks that have the Safari turbo set-up. I've been in contact with APS and have been told by them that they no longer have any of the hard-parts associated with the 1FZ-FE turbo system, that they discontinued making those parts years ago, and that they have no intention of making them in the future.

So, there you have it.

As for rebuilding the turbo, EMS Power is correct - any reputable turbo shop will give you what you want to fit in that space. It is just a Garrett T04E compressor housing with a CHRA T3/T4 56 trim cartridge, .82 A/R turbine housing. I had my original one in my 1997 rebuilt by Turbonetics back in 2006 for $500.

I am now trying to source a good "total replacement" for the 1995 I have since the turbo that was on it was not the original Safari one and was way too restrictive for the 1FZ-FE - it had a 2" exhaust outlet - which led to extreme EGT's and a hole in #1 piston.

So if anyone has advice for a water & oil cooled, internally wastegated turbo with at least a 3+" exhaust outlet that would suit the 1FZ-FE displacement, please chime in!

Note, I'm not looking to drop $1K + on a turbo either, I realize with enough $$$ I can have whatever I want in there. Just looking for a practical solution that will drop into this turbo system with minimal changes to it. The log manifold from Safari does not have accommodations for an external BOV and plumbing one into the exhaust would be challenging to say the least since the turbo hangs down on this setup.

Thanks in advance and good luck to those that have this system

Out of your price bracket, [around $1200 ish] but here now use BA falcon turbo, good for over 300 rwkw on the 1fz fe :grinpimp::steer::cheers:

will be using one on my next one :D

look on the turbo there should be a tag with part numbers. let me know what the part numbers are and i will see what is available.

The Safari system I have does not have the original turbo so I'm not able to check into any numbers on the casting, etc. I do know that the mount flange to the manifold is a T3 and then all of the info I posted above about the internals.

Darren, here in the states a "BA falcon turbo" just means ???????
-give us some specs please!
Thanks for any info though and enjoy your next build

FYI: I would not use Majestic Turbo out of Waco TX for a turbo or a rebuild... they ruined my $1200 turbo out of my car and it was brand new! (sent it to them so they can verify the balance...) They did offer to rebuild it again and charge me full price again...

That is the model that Landtank has been building his system around and what i plan on getting as well. I'm getting close....

Look forward to seeing your results if you grab one.

I was a little surprised at how expensive they are. For some reason i thought i could find one on ebay for maybe $500-$700... that has proven to be nearly impossible.

there are turbos in that price range Alex, they just aren't ball bearing ones.

From what I understand the Safari setup had a custom cast down pipe that came off the turbo to route the exhaust out over the frame rail.

I was able to do that with the GT35R however it is not an internal waste gated setup. Having the internal waste gate makes things real tight.

Mike does your system have that cast down pipe?

I figure if i'm going to spend the $$ on this upgrade i might as well do it right where it's going to be as reliable as the rest of the truck. So i think ball bearings are a must.

Mine does not have the cast down-pipe and that is what initiated my recent contact with APS. I wanted to check into their willingness to sell me just a particular part of the system. I remember when I needed my old one rebuilt in 2006 I contacted them and they offered to sell me a new complete turbo for $1,200 plus shipping expenses. This time they simply said they don't have any stock of any of this set-up and have no plans on producing any.

I think for my set-up I'm looking at a 60 trim turbo instead of the 56 trim and going from the .82 AR exhaust to .91.

The Safari exhaust manifold also presents a couple of issues since it puts the turbo hanging down - which I prefer - and only has the T3 mounting flange. So there's really no room to easily plumb in an external wastegate and the turbo's that use the T3 flange are typically way too small on the exhaust side. I believe that's what happened to the PO of the truck I have. He replaced the turbo with something easily sourced, but that only had a 2" exhaust which led to EGT's feedback under high boost, high ambient temps, etc. Hopefully I can find the specs I'm looking for in a T3 flange but I might end up using an adapter plate that will let me use T4 mount turbos - this opens up quite a bit of stuff.

I think the GT3582R is a great choice but the real drawbacks for my application are:
1)price
2)even more expensive to replace housing with internal wastegate (there's a Canadian company that produces this)
3)a bit small on the exhaust side.
I realize this will let it spool up faster, and everyone is in love with ball-bearing turbos but from my experience with an 80, those things are lost in the drivetrain and big tires.

Mike, I looked around briefly and came up with this company

ATP TURBO

Having a T3 with internal waste gate is going to be tough especially since you want a .91 AR.

For fitting it into the space the housing with the integrated external waste gate would likely be the easiest but then again the AR you want isn't a choice.

I'm not sure why you thing the GT35R is going too be restrictive. My setup is a T4 flange with a 3" V-Band discharge.

Let me know what you think about this company and I can look around later when I have more time.

Rick, my comment about the GT3582R being a tad restrictive was pointed at the 3" outlet size being the biggest size I could find. In my set-up it will have to take an immediate 90-deg turn down in order to connect up with the exhaust. I was just hoping to have 3.25" or 3.5" outlet size and then have the elbow reduce it down to the 3" that the rest of the exhaust is. That was a very nice feature to the Safari cast downpipe piece.

I doubt it matters at all but once I started looking I got lost in the turbo forest....

I think there are a lot of good options if you are in the $1K and up range - it's the $700 and down that seems like a legitimate unicorn.

Thanks and I still need that charcoal can bracket!

I was able to make that turn using a standard 3" mandrel bent piece of tubing. But again I don't have an internal waste gate. That feature adds enough width to cause problems.

If you look on the ATP site they do offer some down pipes as well. Maybe something can be put together.

I'm bringing this back from the dead as I just got a call from the shop that's building me a new 3" downpipe. Turns out the exhaust housing on the turbo is cracked pretty bad.

So now I'm weighing my options. At a bare minimum I'll need a new exhaust housing ($300), but this unit has about 70k on it so I'm trying to decide should I do a rebuild while its out, replace the whole thing, change the A/R on the hot side, etc....

According to the parts list below it has a .82 A/R hot side, but is claims to have a CHRA T04E with a t-4 compressor housing. That seems to contradict what clownmidget heard from APS regarding it being a T3 / 56 Trim.

I'm a newb with turbo specs so please enlighten me. Once I pull the sucker out next week should it have that info cast on it? It there an easy way to verify T3 vs T4 flange size?
