The key is to piss downwind! I shot some video but my camera pulls teh suck and Ali doesn't let me use her nice new camera. The sound gets louder the longer you drive the Pig. It wasn't bad yesterday after a 5 min drive but after coming down the mtn from Cruisin' the Pkway it was LOUD to the point of where I stopped beside a gas pump and said "what the hell is that?!?!?!"

I think I've narrowed down the probs to include all of the things below.... (isn't that scary that I'm diagnosing problems?)
1) timing slightly off
2) bearing on powersteering pump going bad (different sound from what I've talked about here)
3) exhaust leak somewhere near the engine
4) owner doesn't know what the heck he is doing

I'm slammed today at work but will try to download video, create a Youtube account, and post. I'm taking a longer drive this afternoon and if the sound doesn't come back I might just blow this off and not worry.....would hate to bring a couple of guys all the way to my house for nothing big.

Not to hijack again Steve but were you out and about in the pig around 7:30 this morning?

My brother was going to Asheville from Greenville and said he saw a nice, lifted, two tone (gray bottom, white top) 55 on 276.

I told him it sounded like you.

That was me. I was headed down 276 from Travelers Rest to Greenville for work. I'm trying to drive the Piggie a bit to get a better idea what's wrong. The Pig is actually flat green and white but most people at first glance think its gray or black even.

Oh - and its nice b/c he saw it at 55mph!

Louder the more you drive?

I'm betting on leaks at the Exhaust Manifold, since valve rattle is usually a constant. Replane and add a new gasket and your good to go!

Wouldn't it get quiter when hot if it was exhaust leak?

steve your scaring me here, makin me think all of the above might be needed here too. where are all the cenrtral NC wrenchers :)? but first things first, gotta get this stupid steering shaft off!!

waitin on the gasket, gonna do compression, valves, and full fluid change on tues. Hope it all goes well for you.

Been away all day so haven't checked in.

Thanks JP for picking up the parts!

I drove the Piggie some today and here is what happened.

20 minute commute to work w/ 10 minute warm up before just caused the usual valve rattle that Alan heard at the UC Annual Mtg and said to adjust valves - no worries here.

Drove 1 hour from work to Newberry on I26 averaging 65 mph. Stopped to get gas and there it was...loud "rap rap rap rap rap." This is the same thing it was doing after I got off of Hwy 25 after Cruising the Parkway. Cut off engine, filled up with gas, cranked up engine and noise was there but significantly quieter.

Hopped in and skedaddled to my destination < 30 mins away. Stopped in driveway and back almost to regular valve rattle Alan said not to worry about.

What the heck??? :crybaby:

Tractor motor...check the crap out tomorrow and sleep well.

My baby brother's in town, I'll try to bring him by Sunday for a listen. He's a pretty good car doc.

I have to come pick up my chain. JP won't forget will he?

OK you bastids I got it on video/audio. Downloading now to see how well it will come out.

Had to drive an hour and a half today to get it to do it....but then after the Piggie sat for over an hour it did it again immediately on start up.

Drum roll...it gets louder or goes away depening on where the steering wheel is positioned. In the video I am going to try and upload to YouTube you can hear the noise getting louder then going away - that's b/c I'm turning the wheel.

I'll post up a link as soon as I can get the video up.

Sounds like valves or PS pump

What RPM are you idling at....sounds like 1500 rather than 700 RPM.....It's gotta be the timing..pull the valve cover off and you'll know for sure

A big thanks to JP for coming out to help. Also thanks to Bill and his brother.

We pulled the valve cover and JP swore it was not the valves. A bit of BS'ing later and the consensus was the power steering pump was off center which was causing the knock. We adjusted the alignment of the power steering pump and hope that will fix it. While we were in there we threw in a new air filter, fuel filter, PSV valve and plugs and reset the timing.

After talking to Marshall though I might need to redo the timing. The timing was set so far advanced that we couldn't see jack. Marshall said he was told by a little birdie that on desmogged 2fs you can/should set the timing very advanced to help with fuel economy and power. A test drive w/ JP went well but the engine was warm. I did another test drive on a cold engine and the Piggie kept wanting to die at idle. I'll try to adjust the timing forward a bit before I come up to PPR.

Thanks to all again.

Oh, and I have a great pic of JP working! :grinpimp:

Glad you are tracking it down...get that timing sorted out and get her ready for the PPR! See you Thursday!

Now I just need to get my driveshaft on :)

That DS should only take you two minutes! If I don't get my timing fixed before the drive up I'll tinker with it there. It will be more fun working on-site and not in my driveway. I have two houses beside mine for sale. The realtor was attempting to hold an open house Sunday but I put a damper on that. That was about the fourth time that has happened. I don't think he likes me... :grinpimp:

I also hope to beat on my winch some on site too!

Going by memory but I recollect that 14 deg btdc was what you can run a desmogged 2F at. Anything between 10 and 14 is where I aim for and then run and see how it runs at different RPM's and what not....

Hmmm (thinking out loud) so if stock is 7 and I should shoot for between 10 and 14 (excuse my newbness) how would I measure that with a timing light? I know you turn the distributor counter clockwise which will move the 'bb' to the left (counter clockwise) from the index line but how do I know if I have moved from 7 (stock) to between 10 to 14?

ETA: apparently I just need to play with it until it feels right... (sig material there for Dan)
